    I,m thinking of visiting a friend in Boulder for the summer. I've never been to colorado, so I'm curious(george)to hear your impressions, likes, etc...spray counts too. Whats Boulder like? living expenses,jobs,close placec to climb,shops,BARS,etc...

    freeclimb,I never questioned your memory. Are you not reading your posts or are you just skimming? in fact I agree with you on the kevlar thing. i started climbing in 85 right when the whole kevlar thing was all the rage.The first lesson I ever took was at A-16, and they specifically told us to ONLY use kevlar for nut slings, and not for prussiks or as rope.do you dance? 'cause you sure are good at sidesteppin!

    thats a good idea,mabye we could have moroneers posted at the base of all routes to check out all certifications and make sure you have a helmet and the 100 essentials. [laf][laf][laf]

    I totally agree we should continue the fee program! The forest service should use some of that money to enact helmet legislation, requiring all climbers to wear helmets.Also they could put bolts at each climb just for safetys sake.Oh yeah, it would be nice if they could put some sort of smoke detector in the muir hut, maybe with a camera so the rangers could bust those lame ass dope pushers and abusers [hell no] when they get down off the mountain.And while were at it, I was thinking it would be cool if there was some sort of mandatory belay certification you had to get before you could belay anyone.

    One of my all time favs in the winter is split pea soup. the olympia co-op carries an instant soup in bulk. I buy a small chunk of smoked cheddar and cu it into cubes then drop them in when the soups done. i also get those pickled sausages at 7-11.I've been experimenting w/twights Gu theroy; one gu every 1/2 hou or so, its worked great so far but at the end of the day i still want a hot bowl of soup and about 3 cliffbars. also i used to make my own pemmican/logan bars.

    I'm carrying some of the solo discussion over here. Most of the trips/climbs I do are solo, and I'm interested in whittling down what I carry. My style isn't to do a specific route, but to head out and up, following my nose more or less.

    I usually take enough stuff for 2-3 days. since most of my treks cross varying terrain I have been carrying: trekking poles, a BD arc light axe (65cm), a BD X-15 (45cm) with a classic pick, and grivel G12 newmatics.

    I've been looking for a modular ice tool system like the Pika mountaineering Yeti or somthing similar? has anyone used this? I'm 6'6" so I like a long shaft for those times between poles and steeps, and it would be nice to carry 2 "real" tools.i was thinking of getting a pair of black prophets cause the weight would be low enough that I could also carry a classic axe, but then I have all this crap hanging on my pack.so...

    any comments or advice? also any other gear ideas?

    Thats where I found it too. there shipping is free to the US if your order is more than 180 eu's.I'm going to order 2 tools and a shaft as soon as I figure out what the sherpa shaft is.

    whoops; it's a pulsar-multi w/60cm straight shaft,new, either hammer or adze fo $113.00.they sell a 70,75,80,85cm shaft for 37.50 and a "sherpa???"shaft for 43ish(whats a sherpa shaft??

    Ok; If you take a 186 lb chunk of railroad track and hoist it 75 ft. up a tree and at about 50 ft up you anchor a old chounaird #8 stopper and too that you girth hitch a 24 in 1/2 in new dry nylon runner tied with a water knot with 4 in tails, and to that you clip an old chouinard oval, and you secure the 11mm dynamic rope (retired) to the base of the tree, and you drop the railroad tie,you get...

    a BIG PIECE OF STEEL EMBEDDED IN THE GROUND, AND A RUNNER THAT SNAPPED,YOU GUESSED IT, AT THE GIRTH HITCH!
