  1. bicycle commuting?

    backcountry skiing?

    motorcycle riding?

staying in a motel in twisp?

    paragliding?

    serving in Iraq or Afghanistan?

(certainly each activity also has a gradient of risk that one might choose to take)

Craig Luebben's recent death made us question that, even with skill/experience/good judgment, not all accidents are preventable, and furthermore, some folks have given up alpine climbing in light of having kids.

But are other activities more or less dangerous, or perceived as such? Do folks w/ kids give up those activities?

  2. I don't know what Scott the Alkoholik is on about. But although you have "been very careful", you're still indirectly calling for the political sacrifice of a child, because of a ridiculous statement made by the child's dumb mother. I'm not after you because you called baby Trig bad names, I'm after you because you're obsessed with turning Palin's dim-witted political arguments on their head in order to arrive at QED: If Sarah shuts up about her kids we won't pick on her kids, and than she can't get all sour-grapes on us - otherwise other people (but never me) can't be blamed for picking on her kids. It's a pointless exercise.

E-rock, you make a good point, and thanks for keeping the ad hominems away.

I agree that kids should not become collateral damage from a political debate, just as Palestinian civilians shouldn't be killed when Hamas fires rockets from their houses and uses them as human shields.

However it's a tough call on whether to play fair with someone who's not playing by the rules. The moral high ground could cost you victory from being tactically limited, or playing dirty back could cost you the victory by turning public opinions against you.

You certainly got it right that her statements combined with her cult following really grate me. I would have a more conservative political stance if folks such as her, Newt, Rush, and Pat Robertson were not present.

  3. Yawn. I presented a sample size of several hundred. You present a sample size of 3.

Look, it's trivial for me to keep playing this game, especially because the burden is on you to verify your hypothesis.

    Jackson, MS. 28% white.

Tea Party protest from Jackson, MS (photo not embedded here because it's too large)

The point is if you go to a ballgame, the mall, the DMV, a public beach, you will see a diverse population that is representative of the whole population. If you go to a Tea Party / Healthcare Protest, the population does not seem diverse.

Healthcare should not be determined based on one's ethnicity, gender, etc.

So how come all the healthcare protesters seem overwhelmingly Caucasian?

Something smells rotten, and we're not in Denmark.

  4. Throughout this entire thread, I have been very careful not to make any comments myself regarding Palin's children in specific. Seeing the vivid descriptions that you guys are so quick to spew, I can't help but think that you guys cannot see your own hypocrisy in the mirror, that you guys can't leave her kids alone.

  5. How simple can I make it? If she wants the media to leave her kids alone, all she needs to do is stop talking about her kids! That's it.

It's the media's job to question, investigate, cross-examine.. if you don't want them doing that, don't bring it up in the first place.

  6. Gary, you ever been to Asheville? Didn't think so.

Been to the vicinity of Asheville many times. My grandfather lived in Hendersonville.

    But that's not the point.

The point is someone stated it would be a diverse crowd protesting healthcare in a southern state. I produced a counter-example within a minute of googling. That is all.

  7. Palin was recently quoted as saying that the new healthcare plan will harm her son Trig.

I thought she told the media to leave her kids alone.

In my opinion, as soon as she starts parading her kids, they are fair game to the media. She cannot have it both ways.

  8. contador was isolated within Astana with most team members rallied around Armstrong

maybe the team members didn't like contador, because he wasn't a good leader and didn't treat them well. that's certainly what it's seemed like based on his comments.

  9. TdF is one by a team, not an individual. Someone should mention that to Cuntador.

because Armstrong was working for the team when he challenged Contador for leadership?

when did he challenge contador? he never did anything to compromise contador's lead. the only thing was the over-dramatized move that lance cued onto in stage 2, which contador wasn't in position for. there were plenty of times that lance could have attacked, but instead stayed back w/ wiggins, schlecks, etc.

  10. you cycling experts fail to amuse.

contador was dominating, to say the least. stage 18, anyone?

he'll come back next year on a weaker team and still kick arse (although i'm damn curious to see what armstrong can muster after a year of serious prep and the deep pockets of radio shack etal).

or maybe he'll bonk again, like he did paris-nice.

  11. Ya, but if contador were on a pussy team, he probably would not have won. He owes his team some respect. Contador has also had a bad attitude wrt media regarding doping. Why can't he say his vo2max?

Also contador wasn't pulling his fair share in the tour... Sure the other riders could by loser whiners, but i think they have a point

contador might be what beckey is to climbing... A superstar, but not a charismatic leader

  12. i'm not a lance fan. he's actually way cooler now that he's not #1. though i think it would be cool if lance could ride the tour for the next ten years and be the granddaddy of the grupetto eventually.

this year the schleck duo was cool, as was thor hushvold.
