Summer holidays in Denmark: 10 places to visit
The world's best country to travel to is right outside your window. Denmark is beautiful, especially in summer, and we'll introduce you to our favourite places.
We live in the best country in the world. Also, the best country in the world to travel to, if we say so ourselves. Denmark is full of beautiful and cosy summer holiday destinations, and we can't cover them all in this guide.
You can find even more useful tips on the topic of the most popular destinations for your summer holidays: http://www.godtur.dk/artikler/sommerens-hotteste-rejsemaal/. Here are our favourite places in the beautiful Danish country, so join us on a trip to Denmark.
We start the tour at the top: In Northern Jutland
If you love beautiful nature that drives you crazy, don't be fooled into going to Nr. Ljungby. This small coastal town near Løkken is ever-changing and perfect for those summer holidays in Denmark.
Here the sea is slowly eroding the shore, and in just 10 years, 48 metres of shoreline and a small holiday village right on top of the dunes have disappeared.
It's an absolutely unique sight and a chance to get a different perspective on the beautiful, unbridled and sometimes harsh northern nature. No. Ljungby is also an attraction for paragliders, who enjoy the rugged coastal wind.
Paris of the North
Aalborg, the capital of Northern Jutland, has a wonderful cultural scene, a beautiful old town centre and, last but not least, a thriving gastronomy scene. If you're looking for a relaxed and informal dining experience in a cosy setting, then you must visit Aalborg Street Food, which is located in the harbour in Vestby Aalborg. It has world cuisine with an emphasis on local ingredients for all the money.
All in all, the waterfront is a must-see because here Aalborg has undergone an extensive transformation from old industry to a centre of culture and experience.
We're staying on the mainland for now, but there are also good island holidays up north in Fur, Livö and Lösø.
The Wild West is ideal for summer holidays in Denmark
Central Jutland is the heart of Jutland, and in the belt between the North Sea and the Kattegat, you'll find everything you need during your holiday.
On the west coast of Jutland is the spa town of Søndervig. The town is located in the centre of Holmsland Klith, which is a 40-kilometre-long isthmus between Ringköbing Fjord and the North Sea.
With hundreds of summer cottages and the North Sea nearby, it offers a unique holiday atmosphere during the summer. Wide sandy beaches and lively waves attract many water dogs and sun-thirsty visitors.
Fishing is one of the most important professions in the area, and you can buy freshly caught fish from Hvide Sande in most restaurants and many supermarkets.
Just 8km to the east is the market town of Ringköbing, which, with its cosy old streets with shops, is often visited by holidaymakers. There is no doubt that the entire area is already popular with tourists and families with children, and a brand new Lalandia will even open in Søndervig in 2022.
The smallest city in the world
Eastern Jutland revolves around Aarhus. City of Smiles, capital of Jutland - the hometown has many names. But one thing is for sure; Aarhus is a fantastic city to visit as a tourist. All year round.
One of the biggest attractions in Aarhus is Den Gamle By. An open-air museum in the centre of the city where you travel through time as soon as you cross the threshold.
Another museum worth a visit is the ARoS art museum. Here, on top of the museum, you get an exquisite panoramic view of the entire city from a colourful installation called 'Your Rainbow Panorama'.
Aarhus is a modern city with lots of shops, tasty restaurants and cafes, and a very bustling urban life. The area around the stream in the city centre is particularly famous. If you want to try something truly Aarhus, this is where you should dine.
Cosiness, history and high mountains
On the southern coast of Jutland's 'head', Jursland, lies a special region of Summer Denmark: Mols. Here you'll find the Mols Bjerge National Park, which, judging by its name, may suffer from 'madness of grandeur', but the rolling hills are sure to make your heart beat faster on a hiking or cycling trip.
The historic 14th-century Kalø Slotsruin is in the water, and right at the tip of your nose is the beautiful old port town of Ebeltoft.
In Ebeltoft you'll stroll through the centre of Danish history and can visit the frigate Julland, the old town hall, the glass museum, or just stroll through the old crooked cobbled streets and along the harbour with an ice cream cone in hand. It's a 100% summer idyll.
Grab a fishing rod and go fishing in Ebeltoft Harbour or head to Femmeller and cast your line there. Here are some of the best holiday homes and campsites in the country.
And then there's Ree Safaripark, Djurs Sommerland, Randers Rainforest and big city life in Aarhus is just around the corner. Anholt is also just a ferry ride away if you really want to get away from it all and spend a summer holiday in Jutland, Denmark.
Vejle on the world map
Vejle in South Jutland has really popped up on the world map over the past few years, thanks, among other things, to its architecture. Danish bike lovers should definitely visit Vejle with its many hills in Greisdalen and Munkebjerg. Around Vejle - not least around the historic Jelling - you'll find some of the country's most beautiful and challenging cycling routes, and in 2022 the Tour de France itself will take you through the hills.
There are plenty of great places to stay along Vejle Fjord, and a visit to Givskud Zoo, Legoland, the Science Centre Økolariet or the Hopballe Mølle restaurant, famous for its organic chicken, is definitely recommended.
In South and South Jutland, we can also recommend several beautiful islands from Fånö in the west to Als in the east.
Fin is more than okay
We cross the Little Belt Bridge into Funen. We all know that Funen is beautiful, but this is actually an understatement: Funen is fantastic, no less. Especially if you decide to spend your summer holiday in Denmark.
Odense is a big city, but small and cosy in its own way. The centre has pleasant shopping streets where you can find shops for everything imaginable. It's hard not to find something you just have to buy.
Storms Pakhus is a place we recommend to others when they go to Odense. It's street food indoors in a rustic setting. There are dishes from almost every cuisine in the world, and the 'menu' changes regularly. There is also outdoor seating in the summer, so you can sit outside in the sun and enjoy a delicious meal or a cold drink.
Vandkanz Denmark in Funen
In the southwest corner of Funen is Sneeve. And if you continue towards the water, there's a piece of unusual nature there, namely Helnes. This is Denmark's waterfront in all its glory.
You drive along a short embankment to a promontory where the hills rise above the sea. Here you can visit the old mill, which also has a nature school and simple accommodation with a great view.
If you want a more chaste place to live, there are often good deals even in the very cosy Gl. Avernæs Sinatur Hotel on the Fin side is often available during the school holidays.
Also, give yourself time to take a walk around Bobackern. It's a giant hill that's full of flowers in summer.
Summer holiday in Denmark: Wine and Vikings
For many, Nyborg is just a town you pass before or after the bridge over the Great Belt, but it's actually a cosy and equally historic town.
In the middle of Nyborg, you'll find a castle and some beautiful old townhouses. Did you know that the cinema in Nyborg is called KinoVino and that you can combine tapas with the latest movies? That's nice.
In and around Nyborg you'll find plenty of estates and cosy port towns - like Kerteminde, where you can get Denmark's best ice cream. You can also visit the Ladby Viking Museum and learn more about the Viking era and the ship Ladby.
If you want to continue to Sudefin, take the old country road from Nyborg to Svendborg. This way, there's a Morten Korh atmosphere here for all the money - and another ideal destination if you're spending your summer holidays in Denmark.
Sejerø Bay - the perfect family holiday
The trip takes us through the Great Belt to Zealand and we start by turning left.
Not far from Dragsholm Castle in the north-western part of Zealand is Sejerobugten. The whole of Odsherred and the surrounding islands are a large natural area and a popular resort with lots of summer houses and cosy holiday villages.
Here you'll find some of Denmark's most child-friendly beaches, as the water in the bay is shallow and warm. If you go to Gudmindrup Ljung, you'll find large dunes and an ice house that gets crowded in summer.
From here it's a lovely 15-minute walk to Hoibi Leung and Ellinge Leung, where you walk through the marshland of Korevlerne to descend to the beach. There are lots of birds and light, and the beach is just as nice as in Goodmindroop, only less crowded.
Unfortunately, a completely misunderstood project with cows was done in the area, so there are quite a few fences now, but if you can ignore that, it's perfectly fine here. It's also home to the longest bathing bridge in Denmark at 320 metres!
You can stay at campsites, bed and breakfasts or at Dragsholm Castle, for example. Children will love a trip to Sommerland Sjælland, which even in high season doesn't seem as crowded as Legoland, for example, and here too you can stay in their cottages by the park.
Winter is just around the corner and with it the fun at the ski resort. Don't delay until the last minute and pick the perfect ski outfit now!
