normankirk Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 (edited) Snow Lion of Berkely CA, early 1970's - 1977. Two, Vintage, Men's Snow Lion Mountain Parkas - A size small and a medium. Rare. Snow Lion manufactured outdoor clothing and gear during the outdoor sports renaissance and backpacking boom of the 1970's and was especially known for the high quality down filled sleeping bags and jackets. Mountain parka's of the time were usually made from tightly woven 60/40 cloth (60% cotton, 40% nylon) or polyester/cotton poplin fabrics that offered good wind protection but were moisture effective only in repelling fog, drizzle, short duration showers and dry snow. Snow Lion has used a tightly woven 65% polyester, 35% cotton material in these parkas. Classic mountain parka features that were standard in the designs of yesteryear: - Single, zippered chest and 2 lower Velcro closure cargo pockets. Hand slots behind the lower cargo pockets. Zippered access to a full, upper back panel pocket which I suppose could be used for carrying an emergency blanket.........among other things. - The small size has a green outer and royal blue upper lining. Entirely a double layer fabric of polyester/cotton and nylon, these are shell garments and are not insulated. - Medium has a wine colored outer and royal blue upper lining and is the same parka model as the small. - Dark brown, abrasion resistant nylon on the shoulders, neck, hood, upper chest and back. May be a Urethane coated nylon for additional protection from downpours but this is uncertain. - Heavy duty #10 YKK tooth design entry zipper with an outer, snap closure draft flap. The zippers works well. - Wide Velcro closure cuffs and a waist draw cord, none at the hem. - Hood cinches down around the face with a double toggle draw cord at the neck. - These are burly parkas, the medium weighing 2&1/4 pounds. They appear to have been only slightly used and are in exceptional condition. The colors are bright and there are no worn or damaged areas, stains or grime on the fabric. Certainly old school in the evolution of garment technology but still a highly functional piece for many applications. Also, makes a nice travel jacket without being too technical. Or, paired with a sweater for a classic appearance when going out. Hiking oldsters and others, please advise if any of my description is lacking. Asking $65.00 for each, inclusive of shipping.
