Paul Max Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Does anyone have experience with Mt. Yoran or South Mt. Yoran in the winter? I've read that Mt. Yoran itself can develop some good ice climbing in the right conditions. How about steep snow/couloirs? I'm looking for some local alpine-style fun for the winter. Thanks, PM Quote
Maine-iac Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Mt Yoran off of Diamond peak? Enjoyable little scramble in the summer time on your way up to the top of Diamond Peak, but hardly worth the effort, in my opinion to get back that way in the winter time. There is no good access to the mountain, except off HWY 58, which is still like 12 miles or so through the woods, with no real trail if my memory serves me correctly. There are a few waterfalls off some of the spur roads off of 58 that occasionally freeze up. Quote
caverpilot Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Looks like a user (zzril) on SummitPost.org knows a bit of beta on it. Here's a quote from the site: "In the winter, the best access to the mountain is to park at Salt Creek Falls. Navigate up the prominent drainage. Follow the RR tracks past a rock cut and then head up when it seems kind of marshy. I would recommend staying climber's left of the gully. This is about a 12 mi. R/T on snowshoes. Definitely bring ice axe, helmet, crampons. The North side has the potential to generate some SICK ice routes in the right conditions.--(Winter information courtesy of "zzril").
