Trip: Mount Rainier - DC

Date: 7/20/2014

Trip Report:

In mid July 2013, we decided to go up the DC route of Mt Rainier. We wanted it to be relaxing and enjoyable, rather than doing the typical up and down in two days. We came up Saturday the 20th early in the morning, so that we could get our permits to stay at Ingraham Glacier for two nights (Sun and Mon nights).

After camping saturday, started up from Paradise around 6am, ate a small lunch as Camp Muir and arrived at Ingraham Flats around 1 or 2 pm. Set up tents, had plenty of time to make any alterations to our camping spot. Enjoyed a hearty dinner and set our alarms for about 2am. One of the great things about the flats is that we are already 1000 higher than camp muir, so you don't have to start quite as early.

After all the guide service groups had past, there was an outstanding boot path up the route. Above the DC, there was a 40 foot ice wall that needed to be climbed. That was probably the funnest part of the climb. The rest of the way was normal. The weather was perfect, with a great time at the summit.

Since we left a little later, we were pretty much alone on the mountain. We did assist some inexperienced climbers down the mountain as one had a pretty serious injury. After summitting, we stayed the night again at the flats. That is what made this so enjoyable. No rush, virtually nobody on the mountain on a Monday night. Check out the pics and you will see what I mean
