Trip: Mount Hood - South Side/Old Chutes

Date: 5/24/2014

Trip Report:

Despite weather forecasts that called for unseasonably high temps I decided to make the drive to the mountain and hope for the best.

Conditions were perfect!

The snow was frozen well before we made it to the top of the Palmer.

We began at 1:30 a.m. from the Timberline parking lot, and returned by 1:30 p.m. We probably could have shaved a couple hours off our time if there weren't so many people on the mountain, but it was still an enjoyable climb. It was a good thing that the mountain was so solid because we did have to arrest a fall coming back down. Kind of scary, but glad we were roped up.

We did see a rescue op in progress too. Turns out a guy lost his footing and slid from the chutes down into the fumarol. We heard later that he survived with a few broken bones. Lucky dude. Just another reminder that you can't be too careful, no matter how perfect the conditions.

Gear Notes:

Ice axe. Harness. Rope. Crampons. Pickets(did not use, but probably should have.)
