Guest Posted June 19, 2001 Posted June 19, 2001 Thoughts on heli-mountaineering? For those of you who don't keep up with the yuppies, having a helicopter drop you off on the upper glacier thereby avoiding the long approach. Can summit 2-4 peaks in a day rather than weeks. The king lives! Quote
sandon Posted June 19, 2001 Posted June 19, 2001 Something is lost when you make it too easy. Some people choose routes with long approaches simply for the solitude they provide. This definately wouldn't fly in the lower 48, since most (if not all) of the national parks prohibit private aircraft in their airspace. You need look no further than Alaska though, as heli/plane-mountaineering already exists on many levels throughout that state. [This message has been edited by sandon (edited 06-19-2001).] Quote
haireball Posted June 20, 2001 Posted June 20, 2001 it's been common practice in Canada and Alaska for decades...not as common in the lower 48 because so much of our high-quality mountaineering is in either formal Wilderness Areas or National Parks or National Monuments. So when we gotta hump more stuff than we can carry, we use horsepackers. Quote
