Steve will share stories from a number of infamous Cascade rescue missions, including the May 2002 accident on Mt. Hood where nine climbers slid into the bergschrund crevasse, and the subsequent crash of a rescue helicopter that appeared on television and in print media around the world. He will also discuss more recent rescue operations on Mt. Hood, such as the December 2006 effort to locate three overdue climbers from Texas. Steve Rollins has been doing mountain rescue for 10 years and has participated in countless rescue missions, many as Rescue Leader. As an active Rescue Leader and past President of Portland Mountain Rescue, Steve remains a frequent media point-person as rescues unfold on Mt. Hood. Steves most exciting rescue memory was being dropped by helicopter at night onto the Sandy Headwall to rescue a stranded and ill climber. Steve has climbed extensively in the Cascades, as well as occasional climbing trips abroad, including the Italian Dolomites, Canadian Rockies, and the Himalayas. Portland Mountain Rescue exists to save lives! It is a non-profit, volunteer organization of skilled climbers and support resources dedicated to search and rescue operations in high altitude areas or high angle situations below timberline. They educate mountaineers, climbers, hikers and backcountry enthusiasts in safe activities so they are able to avoid the dangers that result in the need for rescue.
