Asolo Titan

Anybody try these boots yet? Any tips on sizing Asolos since they tend to run a full size larger than others? Look like a pretty good Rainier boot.

Okay so I sprung for them since they felt good out of the box. Climbed Cooper Spur (Hood) wed, and did hikes (24 miles) on th/fri just to break them in.

Very flexible for a full shank boot allowing on e to log many miles without any heel lift. I have "British feet" being wide yet low profile/volume, and these boots are designed with that in mind. A really good lacing system (alot of adjustment possibilities), BIG toebox, tight heel, and what everywhere looks to be excellent workmanship for a $265 msrp boot. Would have little problem taking them to Rainier as they are lightly lined. The only tip I might add is that sizing is a bit funky as I downsized a full 1.5 US to get the right fit. Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase and fell they are a great contender for the lasportiva line.

Quick question: what's your street shoe size, and what size did you end up wearing ? Any follow-up on these boots ?

I think they'd be great for a summer climb on Rainier. I've used LS Trango S' twice now, and felt they were right on the edge. I'd have plenty of confidence in the Titan's. ymmv.

For anyone else wondering - picked these up on sale at REI for $199. I usually wear a size 9.5 street shoe and size 10 boot, and size 9.5 in these feels good, even with thick socks. I normally wear wide sizes or Salomons and so far have no complaints about toe room. Very flexible ankles (not as much support). Sole stiffness feels equivalent to a 3/4 shank I'd guess. Heel area feels really good. Seems like a stiff-soled hiking boot to me with a full rand and Vibram. Has a double-tongue. Weight just under 4 pounds.

 

Well, those are my impressions after walking around the house anyway ...

I bought a pair of these Asolo Titan boots from REI and within 4-5 weekends of typical use the stitching at the heel completely ripped apart. So, I returned them to REI and they gave me a new pair. At that time they told me many of these boots have been returned due to the same problem I had. But, they were so totally comfortable that I thought I'd give the second pair a try. It is now 4 weekends later and the heels are already ripping apart again. So, I would say that these boots are a great disappointment. They have the potential to be great boots since they are so light and comfortable. But, I think Asolo skimped on field testing the boots and completely missed this fateful flaw. I wonder if any of you with these boots have had the same problem as I have (twice!).

 

I am going to return the 2nd pair and will get something else. I can only hope they fit as well, but, actually last a few years instead of a few weeks!

If it's only the stitching, take them to Dave Page and have them sew up, they do a good job.

I bought some Asolo approach-type shoes last summer that were newly introduced to market, and the fabric lining around the heels blew out in a matter of weeks. This isn't structural so I've still got them & wear them, but Asolo really screwed up. The later versions have heavier lining fabric in heels. Coincidently, in 1996 my then-8-year-old Asolo Yukons delaminated on Mt. Stuart. I don't have anything againt Asolo, but I think they have something against me.

Can't stitch it back-up because it is the material, actually, that is failing. So, no matter how good the stitching is, it is only as good as the fabric that it stitches together! See attcahed picture

Yikes ! After seeing that I returned mine.

 

I did notice on Asolo's website a leather version, called the Peak GV. Found them listed for sale at www.altitude-sports.com, but when I tried to order, they said size 9.5 was backordered, with the same situation at the factory.
