TR thumbs_up.gifHeaded out the North Cascades Hwy yesterday for a little ice. Road was "closed" at Newhalem, but the gate was open cool.gif. There was a road crew knocking huge death sickles out of the two tunnels just beyond the gate. They told us to go ahead, but to keep moving. Drove the Suby through drifts up to 8" deep all the way to the waterfall. After a brief approach we were down to business. The ice was thin and hollow with plenty of dry unconsolidated snow patches. Made it up two pitches then a bailed due to lack of stubbies. A hairball unprotected traverse ensued to neighboring trees and then a quick rap to the base. Got back to the car, made it back to the gate. What do ya know, the gate was locked. After a friendly encounter with a Seattle City Light employee (really) we were through and on our way. Overall a great trip. Anybody interested and in the area might want to check out all of the ice forming in the Newhalem area. Lots of ice near town and (outside of the gate). Get it while it lasts. Cheers
