nolanr Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 Kicked steps up a gully above SF Stilly drainage, snow was firm in avalanche tracks, otherwise it was pretty much suck. Plowing thru mid thigh or deeper, totally sinking in, spending 30 seconds to tamp down a decent foot placement each time. Didn't bring snowshoes, didn't think I would need them. Despite less than ideal conditions and wandering around in fog and getting snowed on HARD and not summitting anything, it was GREAT getting out. Nice glisade coming back down for several hundred feet. Frozen ass by the time I was done, well worth it though. Quote
catbirdseat Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 Klenke and I had a similar trip much earlier in the season on Lewis Peak which is right next to Morning Star Peak. We got very wet, but did make the summit. We had a lot of brush to contend with. You might have had a chance to summit with a larger party, but I kind of doubt it given your description. Quote
nolanr Posted May 9, 2003 Author Posted May 9, 2003 It wasn't totally undoable, I would have had to do quite a bit of nasty traversing though. Ran out of motivation. At least I kept going long enough to hit a ridgecrest and get a bit of a look around. That peak's skunked me a couple times, it's not a major peak at all but I'm probably gonna have to go back again some time and summit it. Not right away though, it's not going anywhere. Quote
nolanr Posted June 8, 2003 Author Posted June 8, 2003 Tried again yesterday, I think I gotta leave this mountain alone. Went up a rotten gulley, kept thinking it would get better, it didn't. Kept thinking "I better top out on this thing so I can find a different way down, I DO NOT want to have to down climb a couple of those sections." I ended up having to. I throw the term sketchy around loosely but it really was sketchy. I've made myself nervous scrambling solo before, part of me kinda liked the adrenaline rush, but there was nothing good about it except that I did get back down eventually. Pushed the envelope just a bit too far, I think. It's so dumb to think I could've got myself seriously injured or killed doing something so insignificant. Did a bit of a mind job on myself. Definitely not retiring from climbing, but plan to exercise a bit more caution and better judgement in the future. It was a beautiful day to be out, although a bit on the toasty side. Taking it easy today. Happy to be alive and healthy. Quote
