New Application Process and Dates
for the Enchantment Area Permit Reservation System
Summer 2011
New application submission dates of February 28 - March 20 for summer 2011
Big changes are coming! To help streamline the permit application process and provide for a more timely response to applicants, we are working with the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS) to put the Enchantment Permit Area reservation system on the internet. For 2011, applying for a permit reservation will require going to www.recreation.gov and clicking on the "Permits" tab near the center top of the home page screen, then applying through a series of simple menus.
The Recreation.Gov website will accept applications from February 28 through March 20. After March 20 a lottery will be run of all applications accepted up until that point, and applicants will receive notification whether or not they are successful. The website will also provide a way to issue permits later in the year as cancellations occur.
Those trying for an Enchantment Area permit for the summer of 2011 will need to apply through the website, or through a call center which will be provided by NRRS. The new system is not yet operational on the website, but in the meantime, if you are planning to apply for a permit in the coming year you can go to www.recreation.gov and set up a profile.
You can also check out the current Permits section of the website, where the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and several river permit systems now have their home, and get a feel for what the coming system will look like.
The old permit application forms will no longer be used and forms mailed to the Wenatchee River Ranger Station will not be accepted. We will still do day of entry permits here at the Ranger Station, but all advanced reservations will now be done through the new web-based system.
We will post updates as soon as details are worked out, so continue to check here for further information.
How To Apply For An Enchantment Area Permit For 2011
There are three ways to obtain a permit:
(1) The Annual Permit Lottery
As in past years, the bulk of permits will be issued by advanced reservation through a lottery. About 75% of all available permits will be distributed through this lottery. Applications for the lottery will be accepted at www.recreation.gov from February 28th until March 20th.
Applicants will need to:
(A) Set up an account. This can be done at any time, and your account will also allow you to use recreation.gov to reserve other permits or campsites that are part of the National Recreation Reservation Service system.
(B) Fill out an application. Click on the “Permits” tab at the top of the www.recreation.gov and then click on the section there for the Enchantment permits. Follow the instructions carefully, and be sure that you have chosen the correct permit zone and entry dates, as these cannot be changed later. You may apply for several alternative choices of dates and/or zones. You will be charged a $6 transaction fee when you submit your application.
At this point, you will NOT have purchased a permit, but rather will have entered the lottery. After March 20th, all valid applications will be run through the lottery process, and you will then be notified by email as to the results. If you are successful in the lottery, the email will say that you have been awarded a reservation. You must then confirm a reservation before April 5th. Awarded reservations that are not confirmed by April 5th will be voided, and the unclaimed permit quota will be put into a pool for direct purchase of permits, as described below.
Actual permits are not mailed and are not given out in advance; you must pick up your permit in person on the morning of your trip at the Wenatchee River Ranger Station.
(2) Make A Reservation Directly
The second way to obtain a permit will be by post-lottery advanced reservations at www.recreation.gov, after April 5th (after the lottery confirmation deadline.) A relatively small number of permits will be available through the website after the lottery. In past years virtually all Core Enchantment Zone Permits were allocated in the lottery, as were most Colchuck and Snow Zone permits. Therefore, this second way of obtaining a permit will likely be useful mostly for the Stuart Lake and Eightmile/Caroline Permit Zones. However, any lottery awards that were unclaimed after the lottery, and any cancellations made thereafter, will be made available on the site, on an on-going basis. These permits will be available for direct purchase, up to the per day quota limits prescribed for each zone.
As with the lottery, actual permits are not mailed, and are not given out in advance; you must pick up your permit in person on the morning of your trip at the Wenatchee River Ranger Station.
(3) “Walk-in” Permits Available On A Daily Basis
As in past years, 25% of all permits will be made available on a day-of-entry basis for “walk-in” permits each morning, Monday – Saturday, during the June 15th -- October 15th permit season at the Wenatchee River Ranger Station. These permits are valid for entry only on the day they are issued. Permits are issued at 7:45 AM each morning, excluding Sundays. The number of permits is limited by quota, and demand often exceeds availability. If more people are present requesting a permit than there are permits available, a lottery will distribute permits. Because a lottery is held, there is no need to camp at our front door or arrive hours ahead of time, but please plan to arrive by 7:30, as late arrivals will not get to participate in the lottery.
Additionally, if other groups fail to pick up their reserved permits by 9:00 AM, those unclaimed permits will also be made available for that day, immediately after 9:00 AM. Our Office is closed on Sundays, and there are no “walk-in” permits available on Sundays, nor on the Columbus Day holiday.
