Unlocking a memory card

You've composed the shot. You click the shutter, and...

 

"Memory card is locked".

 

Locking switches (the tiny grey tab on the left card, shown in the 'unlocked' position) frequently fall off or slide into the locked position. If it has fallen off and cannot simply be slid back to the 'unlocked' position, here's how to 'unlock' it.

 

The sensor on your camera that detects this locking switch's position is entirely mechanical - there is no electrical connection to the card. All you need to do is fill the gap with something, anything, to prevent that sensor from tripping.

 

Simply scotch tape a piece of #22 gauge insulated wire (common thermostat wire) in the slot as shown on the right card, and resume shooting.
