My wife, a couple friends and i have been watching, closely, for a break in the weather; for our rookie ascent on Hood! It turned out to be a fantastic day, by our standards! Left Yakima after work on Friday, 6pm, arrived at hood around 9:30p. Check team gear, pack gear and attempt pass out; before ascent...never bodes well for me...wife was snoring..haha, good for her! Up at 11p, trail at midnight. Ascended around 1000ft an hour on a broken ice crust from the cats running money movers to 'the road'! ha. The pre dawn, dawn and early morn were as clear as a bell! AWESOME stuff! Lights from Portland were a warming feeling from the cool breeze flowing off of the upper flanks! NO REAL WIND, at all! There was the mild flow of cold air floating down from the warm air exchange as the sun crested the horizon and warmed the peak. Unfortunately this drug all the sulfur fumes with them...all the way to the parking lot! We were a tad nauseous by the time we reached the H ridge! H ridge at 5:30a ish. Tons of climbers crawled from the depths, must have been over 100-150 on the mtn that day...some of whom should have taken a few extra classes..if ya know what i mean! ; regardless...gorgeous day, great conditions! Sun was warming slopes; very small ice chunks were breaking off near right hand chute; kept a close eye. Many, many small chunks kicked from the linear composition of climbers on the way to 11k. Ridge was nicely kicked in by the time we showed! What an AWESOME spectacle, although daunting, to see two sides of a route that with the smallest lack of respect would and could wisp one away with the crossing of herd of aardvarks. Awesome summit! Awesome day! No wind, clear skies, warming sun! Couldn't have begged for a better day! Huge thanks to the team; Doug, Tracy and my Awesome wife Krystee!!
