Based on the OP "study", anyone who has ever spanked a child, did so out of anger/lashing out. I don't believe that is the case. Sure, there are plenty of abusers using the cover of "discipline". So are you saying that most parents who hit their kids, at the moment of striking them, are completely cool and rational and have thought through exactly why they are hitting their child, what lesson they intend to teach, and the likelihood that it will be taught? Or, furthermore, that a child who is being hit can tell the difference between the hand that strikes them "for their own good" and the hand that strikes them out of abuse? And that the first type of punishment has a net positive effect, whereas the second type has a net negative? You two keep it up and Minx is gonna spank us all..... oh come one now...have you seen my avatar? you have to say please to get a spanking from me. all kidding aside - there is a line between spanking and abuse. i'm not sure what it is. what's that line about porn and knowing it when you see it? my son received very few spankings. it was reserved for things that were really major and likely to kill him. i think maybe 4 of them. i'm sorry but there are some things for which a timeout is not sufficient. i had a similar discussion with a horseman that i respect a great deal. his take on it regarding horses was that it was definitely abuse if it was done to release anger or frustration it was abuse. if there was no potential for the horse learning anything but fear it was definitely abuse. obviously, i'm not comparing training a horse to raising a child. "I wish I were a rich man" vs "Yesterday, I was rich" -- "was" is the indicative mood of the verb and is appropriate for things that are true, or likely to be true in hypothetical situations. Doesn't anybody know English anymore???
