WELCOME TO THE CASCADECLIMBERS.COM FORUMS   02/03/18

We have upgraded to new forum software as of late last year, and it makes everything here so much better!  It is now much easier to do pretty much anything, including write Trip Reports, sell gear, schedule climbing related events, and more. There is a new reputation system that allows for positive contributors to be recognized,  it is possible to tag content with identifiers, drag and drop in images, and it is much easier to embed multimedia content from Youtube, Vimeo, and more.  In all, the site is much more user friendly, bug free, and feature rich!   Whether you're a new user or a grizzled cascadeclimbers.com veteran, we think you'll love the new forums. Enjoy!

What if the shelter at Muir is full?

Recommended Posts

Is there any way of knowing, when you leave Paradise, if you can, for sure, leave the tent in the car and plan on getting a seat at the Muir Shelter? I'd hate to gamble, leave the tent behind and have to slide back to Paradise b/c the hut is full.

You can ask the rangers. They keep track of how many climbers are registered and probably have a rough idea of the percentage of of climbers who tent it vs camp in the Muir shelter.

Why would you want to stay in the shelter. Way more fun and enjoyable to sleep outside.

i have slept in the shelter. it was like sleeping in a freezer. i think it was actually warmer outside that night. that was 2 years ago during late july, if i remembr correctly.incedently, i took a tent with me but wanted to sleep in the shelter, just to be able to say, Hey I did that.It really was a cool experience, literally and physically.

you should always try to be prepared for the unexpected,so i would recomend a tent should be part of your gear if you dont use it at least you have a backup plan. think of it this way, it's only a few pounds divided amongst friends. have fun, be safe, expect the unexpected.

I would not bother with a bivvy sack but a snow shovel would be good. If the Shelter is full, dig a snow cave nearby. Just try not to get your clothes all wet while digging and you'll probably sleep better outside anyway.

Why all the hate for the shelter? I prefer it to carrying a tent or sleeping in a cave. To each his own I guess.

DPS' advice to ask the Rangers is good. Still, no way of "knowing" "for sure"...

If you do end up getting a shelter spot I hope you have good ear plugs. If you want to actually sleep in there that is. Only time I stayed in that shelter was back in '81, two guys were snoring so loud nobody else could sleep. Our summit day started earlier than we wanted but it was cool because we ended up in front of most everyone else on the way up. Coming down was a zoo, there was no avoiding it on the DC...

If I had a do over on that climb I'd leave Paradise early and carry a tent up to Ingraham Flats. It's nice up there...

I heard that sometimes people smoke pot in the Muir hut, is that true?????

Last time I spent the night in the Muir shelter there were six of us, two were former Mt Rainier climbing rangers. I won't out who it was, but one asked if anybody had any pot.
