This thread needs to die.
Why? We've just hit 5 pages! Only 5 more and we can start talking about global warming... :)

Oh, and :pagetop:

I think global warming is a conspiracy...but who is behind it?! Con-spire... a spire..like chianti spire, chianti is a wine..wine, Italy is famous for wine...and Italians like pasta...pasta, hmmm... cleary the Olive Graden is involved somehow.

actually the crampons will be great for climbing up the choss pile.

I think after five pages, I have just come up with the answer of "why alpine starts". And it was your words - "choss pile": which is what The Mountain actually is -- a pile of loose rock and frozen snow. Therefore, if the rock fall later in the afternoon doesn't get you - then it will be the long slippery ride down (caused by clogged crampons). Stopping in a nearby glacier may not be as bad as the incredible acceleration one can achieve in a solo descent.

sobo - I'm suprised that you don't know "Jack"! :lmao:

Read this:

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/407640

then this:

http://www.mdconsult.com/books/page.do?eid=4-u1.0-B978-0-323-03228-5..50006-9&isbn=978-0-323-03228-5&uniqId=311447894-154

If the second link does not work do a Google search for Paul Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine and read about altitude related illnesses.

There is a paywall...I'm not a doctor and it looks pretty involved to register?
