bonathanjarrett
My wife works for a public library and has the (excellent) job of maintaining the section that includes climbing. She needs to buy about a dozen climbing movies to round out the collection. She asked me so I am asking you all: What is your top ten list? This can include instructional films, biography, fictional accounts, climbing p0rn, etc.

wfinley
Cliffhanger. I know people diss it ... but comeon - it's an awesome film! With Wolfgang Gullich free soloing sick overhangs and great quotes like "Gravity sucks" what's not to like?
mountainmatt
high lane I just recently saw this "awesome" film that basically involves via ferrata for about 30 minutes followed by a long brutal serial killer scene. Definitely climbing at its best! If we are adding such classics, add "Take it to the Limit" Highlights include: soloing the water tower epic bivy on class 4 terrain (a few hundred feet up) climbing with fingerless gloves hard core top roping contest . And if sender films makes more - stay on top of it! Other goodies, West Coast Pimps (Maybe harder to find) Front Range Freaks Friction Addiction (Can't miss John Gill sections) Rampage My list is a little dated... bonathanjarrett
What about "educational" films that deal in history, avalanche preparedness, technique, etc? As well, these movies are for the general population, so anything that the non-climber should see to get a good sense of what climbing is about (aka not a skewed perspectives that come from Hollywood films)? Hugh Conway
Historically the Fanck mountain films (Die Heilige Berge, Die weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü, Der Wisse Rausch - available for download here http://www.archive.org/details/1931-Der-Weisse-Rausch ) were influential in romanticizing the mountains. Honestly the climbing porn movies are boring (same for ski porn) not sure how much interest those'll have from anyone.
gyro
I think I've seen all the well known ones I like listed already but would add the 1956 film "The Mountain". I don't know what it is about the movie but I really like it.
