Trip: Mt Hood - Wy'East to Superbowl

Date: 5/29/2010

Trip Report:

We found a seam in the weather and climbed up to Wy'East via the left side of the ridge above Meadows. Essentially we ascended the White River Glacier for most of the way. Climbing on the skins was good. There was a crust most of the way which crunched and conformed to make a platform for the traverses. There were no avalanches that we could see. Wy'East was also good ascending although it was a bit stiffer, and of course, steeper. Ski crampons were necessary. Kicking steps might have been a better move. The skiing down was breakable crust on Wy'East until it intersected with Superbowl. From there it was smooth sailing on fine corn snow. [img:center]http://[/img]

Gear Notes:

The usual stuff including ski crampons. Didn't bring ice axe or crampons but next time I would. If there wasn't the breakable crust on Wy'East it would have been ncessary to have both.

Approach Notes:

We started at the ski area left side and dropped into White River Glacier. Four traverses across the glacier took us to the bottom of Wy'East. More of the same to the top. Wy'East is safest to ascend up the middle. Skier's left can avalanche.
