Pilchuck71
I have a red anodized aluminum plate made by MSR. It is approx 3" x 2" x 1/2" thick. It has 5 holes machined into it and a blue anodized set screw that enters from the short end. I bought this in a lot of "old" gear today, but I have no idea what it is. JBo6
http://homepage.mac.com/inov8/Compass/msrimages.html Take a look through this. If you look on the homepage of the website it is possible they have more old MSR catalogs. Was this in that Craigslist posting with the hammer and old looking Joe Brown helmet? murraysovereign
They're used in bar fights - the bolt tightens down onto your thumb so your opponent can't pull it off and use it against you.
Pilchuck71
Thanks, I will check out the link. Yes you are correct about it being from the CL add. There were some interesting items. Definitely some good adds to my personal collection. Like the unused Chouinard Alpine Hammer.

stevetimetravlr
I think that plate used to be used for rope management big wall climbing. I could be wrong but it looks similar.
Pilchuck71
I had guessed it to be some form of rigging plate or friction device. I really have no clue though and so far unable to make a positive ID.
MarkMcJizzy
You may want to post on SuperTopo.com . With people like Reilly Moss, Werner, et al, they may stand a better chance of telling you. I've never seen that, and I've been around a little bit also. The lack a ratings and the set-screw makes a rigging plate seem unlikely
shoo
My instinct would say a peak force reducing plate of some kind, similar to a Kong Kisa (http://storrick.cnchost.com/VerticalDevicesPage/MiscDevices.shtml) That screw is a bit odd, though.
