A buddy of mine recently got a summons to appear in court regarding a trespassing charge pertaining to activity near the Lake Champlain (sp) water shed near Granite Falls. He talked to the prosecuting attorneys office and went in for a visit disputing the charge. They showed him a photo of he and his dog walking down the road near the water shed. The case was dropped as the road is within public access rights. The moral of the story - there are cameras out there.

Your buddies story confirms it even more. Thanks Pilchuck. I do find it strange that he got charged for just walking down the road with his mutt though....is there more to that story? Had he driven down the road first so they had his license plate? Surely facial id isn't that far along. Maybe they had multiple cameras along the road. Do you know if it was it a Forest Service violation, county or state thing? Was he charged with "improperly walking a schnauzer"?

I'd like to know my rights if I find one - if it's unmarked like the one that guy found, can I legally keep it? How do I distinguish an unmarked camera owned by the FS from some random pervert's?

I'm thinking free cameras are lying in the woods just waiting for us to find them!

Methheads feel the same way about your car.

Ahhh-hah! I just spotted the business end of the thing, the actual camera, wow, I didn't see it previously. They have it rigged remotely from the box. I wonder how far? Hard to see and all but invisible.

...anyone else not see it there?

wow, so from a camera shot along a road in the woods they were able to ID him and mail him a summons? did he have a photo on file somewhere they were able to match it to? yer sure that they didn't get his license plate from a photo since they monitor their watershed access roads because they've had problems with dumping or something? i cant take a wiz if i know someone is watching, god this sucks

the camera network along the appalachian trail and every jackass FS road crossing must be incredible. they should be able to get a lot more accurate stats about usage now--guess that means i dont have to bother filling out those wilderness permits since those are always at then end of a road.

sorry its a batshit crazy idea--there are cameras along every forest service road! but you can never find them, they're hidden so well. I have a friend of a friend who found a microchip in a hair follicle and i have a different friend who works for the cia who told me that they're even smaller now so you can't find them, LOL, but basically what I'm trying to tell you is we all have microchips in our scalp--but you can never find them! Trust me, my friend is on the inside and let me in this! but don't tell anyone. oops!

His truck was parked outside the gate and I am sure that is how he was tracked down.

The area does have some history of trouble and we all work hard to bring a positive presence and follow all the rules.

We are fullu aware that the parking lot is patrolled and are okay with that, but when you get a summons and have to appear it IS freaky, especially if you consider that there have been known safety breaks taken along said trail. :/

Makes one think twice about what they choose to participate in in the woods.

He was accused of trespassing in a restricted watershed.

Which is off the right of way and he never left the right of way.

I'm just saying for me personally, that next time one of buddies wants to spark one up I may reconsider partaking if I am going to be on camera. I am thinking that turning a simple possible false trespassing charge into a posession charge or something for the occasional time you choose to partake suddenly make the risk outweigh the benefit.

That is just me though and I am a relatively paranoid fellow about some things.

So now these alleged cameras can also positively identify whatever you are smoking, and then somehow find out who you are, and then send the DEA to your house to arrest you for simple misdemeanor posession? WOW, NEFARIOUS!!! YOU SHOULD BE CAREFUL OUT THERE NOW!!!

Of course, they're watching you in your house, too, so you're screwed. That's why I only smoke with the covers pulled up over my head.

Bears appreciate other furry critters like no other species.

With thousands of real cameras that are being installed: the ones that photograph every license plate going in and out of Medina, in public parks, on the ferry system, in the city, with the NSA filtering all electronic communication, with the major telecoms making a profit on supplying our personal records to the feds without probable cause and in violation of their bullshit privacy policies....

....the government has gone too far by installing satellite brain wave readers in marmots. Notice how those little bastards never take their eyes off you? And bushy tailed wood rats; ever notice how every time you chuck a rock at one the weather suddenly gets nasty? COINCIDENCE????

This is funny. We are takign 3rd hand information like it is gospel. A buddy tells Pilchuck who tells us. Hmm, may a few things be missing in the translation? All stories have two sides. We are hearing one. The other side could be that a FS ranger stopped this buddy, talked to him, ID'd him (or got his license plate) and taken a picture of him. The FS truck could have a video camera in it, which the ranger can get a still-shot picture from. For me to take this buddy story at face value, I would have to talk to him and use my own judgement, not hearing it through someone else over the anonymity of the internet.

Remember last winter when Sno Co sheriff towed a few cars from the Mountian Loop near Pilchuck? The OP stated how the cars were off the road, safely parked, etc. and then there are 5 pages of "oh my god, police are evil, government is bad! Poor poor innocent hikers who did nothing wrong are targeted." Then more to the story comes out, and we learn that these "legally parked cars" are actually blocking one lane of traffic, restricting snow plow access. Whether they needed to be towed or not I don't know, but the point is that there are two sides to every story, and the truth is somewhere in the middle.

So far, like Tvash said, all this is from one article from one small-town newspaper, where one person finds one camera. It could have been there due to reports of poaching, illegal dumping or illicet drug grows, all forest service crimes which I am sure everyone on this site would agree should be stopped, caught and prosecuted.

Oh, wait, having to think along these lines requires a little logic and isn't as fun as huge conspiracy theories. Guess I should just don my foil hat and join the paranoid schizophrenics that seem to run rampant any time one of these stores come out. "They are coming to take me a away, oh my, they are coming to take me away!"

As far as third hand info goes - the guys been my buddy for fifteen years. Is a 100% full on law abiding citizen. Is the worst bullshitter I have ever met and seldom has the complexity of character to fabricate such a story. I was actually able to read the summons that he recieved.

In the case of anonymity - My name is Tyson geBauer. Oh god I am now exposed on the infernets.

I am not saying the sky is falling just commenting on Bill's post and illustrating what I know with a verified anecdote about a single incident in an area know to be patrolled but until this time not know by us to have cameras installed.

That is all I got - Ripley's believe it or not - You decide. :)

No, Trash did say that, however @ 4 posts down I explained my personal, first hand evidence from a friend who is a federal agent. I have told my story to a few of my friends before I read the news article which fully supports the federal agents point, and Pilchucks story is the 3rd bit of substantiating evidence. For myself, I don't have a tinfoil hat, but I believe that this will soon be coming out fully as the roads start being utilized this spring.

I mean, who ever thought that the United States would (or could) monitor every phone call made in the country? Every damn one! Now there is no question that is the case. Who ever thought that the United States could have such good underwater listening devices that they could monitor the entire worlds oceans simultaneously and not just determine where every Soviet sub was located in real time anywhere underwater, but tell if another noise was a whale farting on the other side of the globe in the next ocean over? We had this very capability since the 70s as it turns out.

1984 as the book details it may be a bit late, but it's showing up.

Yeah, except that the NSA's job is to spy, and they pretty much enjoy a blank check budget, and the military's job is to track subs, and they also have an almost unlimited budget. Hence, the slight credibility issue of a very budget limited NFS monitoring a third of a million miles of road for...what reason exactly? But hey, your friend said it, so it must be true.

My point is that the very real issue of government surveillance is not addressed effectively or credibly by chasing after fantasies like this one. There's plenty of very well substantiating stuff happening to act upon.

With all fucking booby traps the pot growers are setting up I can see why they have gone this route. And of course if ya ain't doing anything illegal then wtf. However, I can just see it now - some family goes out camping and their 5 year old runs out of the tent naked. Now we got the FS making child porn.

As for smoking wacky tobacco - unless you are showing the leaves in all their glory ain't a chance in hell the AG is going waste their time as many people still roll their own tobacco cigs.

Perhaps the cameras should be id'ed and then publicized as geocaches.

In that case, your friend, who is a federal agent, sure has loose lips. Did he know you were going to go right on the internet and post it, while implicating him?

Has he told you any other state secrets? What kind of security clearence do rangers get, anyway?
