jesselillis
any of you handy types built your own bosun's chair? i'm reticent to drop $60 on the BD one, but it sure would be nice for those climbs where you know 50% of the time you are going to be hanging in your harness belaying... web-redirects, personal design plans, alternative strategies, etc. welcomed
ivan
piece of particle board w/ foam ducktaped to it n' holes drilled for loops to hook to anchor if you're doing a bigwall, they're practically indispensable, and worth the 60$ b/c they're more collapsible/lighter
Ishmael
I used 3/4 inch plywood, two layers of foam sleeping pad material, a nylon cover over the whole thing and two loops of 9/16 webbing. It works like a dream. In fact, I have fallen asleep in it belaying many times...
OlympicMtnBoy
Mine came from the free bin at the used marine supply store down the street. Once in a while they have seats used by actual bosuns in there for less than $60. Not much different really.
LostCamKenny
It works like a dream. In fact, I have fallen asleep in it belaying many times... i bet this is reassuring for your partner(s) to know...
justinp
piece of particle board w/ foam ducktaped to it n' holes drilled for loops to hook to anchor The duck tape makes the seat a bit slippy Edited January 26, 2010 by justinp
ivan
you sure you hadn't pre-applied a lubricant?
hanman
Here's mine- 1x4 pine- lightweight, with lite strap so you don't slip out when inebriated/sleeping etc. I used heat shrink tube where ropes go through board for chafe protection. My ass has built in padding, so no extra needed:) MH
ivan
padding sure is nice in winter though...as is a built in coffee holder
MATT_B
I used a hub cap we found along the road once. Not the best but it worked . . . I'v found a but bag is much better. Maybe not quite as comfortable but lighter and a lot easier to hall around.
Off_White
Butt bag and bosun's chair serve completely different purposes. For example: I'm going to need a bosun's chair to put in all those rap bolts on my new route on Prusik Peak, but you're only going to need a butt bag for the hanging belays when you repeat it. Its all about the amount of time you're spending in the seat and the other baggage you're hauling around.

Off_White
I said "for example" as a hypothetical situation...
billcoe
Well then, I will only give it a hypothetical 25 more pages....
