There's a lot of info out there. In addition to being nasty in the particulate matter department, the production of diesel fuel uses 25% more energy--virtually all of the energy per mile you gain while driving isn't real. Also keep in mind that there is a NASA study currently underway that may end up placing a lot of the blame for glacial recession on albedo decreases caused by soot.

Both links seem to be close to middle ground overall. If anything, they favor Deisel. Did I miss-read something?
