Trip: Fawn Peak FKT - Fastest Known Time - North Ridge from Banker Pass

Date: 8/8/2009

Trip Report:

…thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump :chestbeater:

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. True.

And lampooning is the insincerest form of flattery. Also true.

Senator Poopy Head and I climbed Fawn Peak (6577 ft) east of Mazama last weekend and thereby claim the FKT (Fastest Known Time) of this mountain: 1:46:36. We had to deal with more adversity than we bargained for but in the end the summit was attained in short order. We looked out on smoky skies and over at a lot of bigger peaks I’ve climbed where I don’t have the FKT, not that I care.

Location (Elevation): Time Elapsed* / Split* / Real Time

Banker Pass car (4,640 ft): 0 / 0 / 11:30

Where wife wisened up to this charade (5,290 ft): 00:30:00 / 00:07:05 / 12:00

Where Poopy Head pooped (5,400 ft): 00:38:19 / 00:08:19 / 12:08

Where I lost that old trail (5,870 ft): 00:53:10 / 00:01:55 / 12:23

Hit the ridge east of the summit (6,240 ft): 00:58:55 / 00:05:45 / 12:28

At the summit cairn (6,577 ft): 01:04:08 / 00:05:13 / 12:34

Left the summit clearing: (6,569 ft): 01:14:06 / 00:01:08 / 12:44

Where I tripped over my insular wit (6,200 ft): 01:17:19 / 00:03:13 / 12:47

Where I landed on my funny bone (6,200 ft): 01:17:21 / 00:00:02 / 12:47

The tasty beer down my throat (4,640 ft): 01:47:59 / 00:01:23 / 13:17

* times given down to the nearest second because it’s, you know, like, competition swimming ’n all. It could mean the difference between the FKT and the almost FKT.

As usual, I've posted a full trip report with lots of photos on my website:

Here is the view of Fawn Peak from the north (from Sweetgrass Butte):

Senator Poopy Head and her cow manure perfume:

Fawn01_cow_manure_dog.JPG

We started out from Banker Pass just downhill from the road on a spur landing behind a barbed-wire gate. Wife Michelle joined us initially but the wisdom she has gained from one-too-many outings with me allowed her to see the Fawn flora for what it was: nothing fun to fawn over…

Fawn11_N_side_fr_logging_road.JPG

So I carried on with just Poopy Head. We ran into an odd swath of downed trees lined up parallel like a puncheon road. The “road” extended in a serpentine fashion all the way up the lower north ridge from about 5000 ft to 5800 ft. This road is even visible on the satellite photo. It was an easy landmark to keep track of in the woods but for the ascent it was a rather obnoxious steeple chase. So I generally kept to its east side.

Fawn02_log_swathe_I.JPG

The brush beside the puncheon road was not that great. Then I ran into even brushier stuff where the ridge steepens. I did find an old trail (cut logs on either side being the giveaway) but I promptly lost it. But, before I knew it, I was on top.

Fawn07_Brie_at_summit.JPG

The forest fire smoke butting up the east side of the Cascades really hampered my viewing pleasure. Here’s the Gardner Massif and Silver Star Mountain (and a tapeworm streak of the North Cascades Highway) out to the southwest:

Fawn05_view_SW.JPG

To the WNW rises the bulky Goat Peak (hircine mother of Goat Wall at its base) with its lookout atop. At right in the distance is the Robinson Mountain massif:

Fawn06_Goat_Peak.JPG

But I couldn’t stay forever. I had an FKT to make sure I achieved. So back down I went with Poopy Head. We again encountered the puncheon road. On the downhill it was a little easier to steeple chase it:

Fawn10_log_swathe_III.JPG

Again, here is the link to the full trip report with lots of photos on my website:

Klenke's playpen

In addition to pointing out my website twice in one TR, I’ve also cross-posted this TR on NWHikers and Summitpost so that I can maximize the self-aggrandizement. For the record, it’s not enough that I record my record for the record. I need there to be no uncertainty whatsoever that everyone everywhere forever knows.

Useless information: beer at the car; heck, take one to the summit if you want (if you can overcome the weight penalty), camera (because it’s important to take lots of photos while attempting to do something as fast as possible)

Really useless information: I’d like to say that the only reason I climbed this peak is because it resides on the Washington Top 200 by prominence, a list no one has finished and one that John Roper and I are planning to finish at the same time on the same summit (probably in 2011). But, truth be told, that’s not the only reason I climbed this peak. I also climbed it because I can. :chestbeater:

You won’t climb it because you don’t.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot that in case you forgot, the full trip report with lots of photos on my website:

Klenke's playpen

Here's the penultimate parting shot. Fawn (back left) and Goat Peak from the northwest (from Slate Peak) the next day:

Ultimate parting shot: :ass:

what i wanna know is, what the FKT is for Senator Poopy Head? I bet poopy head did double your distance! I know poopy head had to have been faster than you with 4x4 and all.

Hehe, not bad. I think Leor gets his times straight out of his watch - it probably dumps the whole table to a text file.

I've gotten times ex post from the EXIF data in my camera photos. But I'm more a candidate for Slowest Known Time.

I know people use split times when going for a Nose record. It lets you know if you are not within range and can stop running it out so far....

Of course, one man's chestbeating is another's data sharing for fellow mountain runners. It's near impossible to judge intent. I was just reading through the other day in the Southern Pickets ridge traverse thread, where Wayne was so psyched to have pulled off this dream climb. Others interpreted his excitement as an ego/competitive thing. It took a fair amount of communication before people understood it. Keep on havin' fun out there!

pssst....hey paul. I know your poking at me a bit as I am one of the only ones who posts trs on all three sites. But ya know what? "You can" and did. Go for it cause you have me allllll wrong. Plus i thought it was absolutely hilarious!!!

I post on all three because of many reasons. Never to chestbeat as that would hurt like hell! (plus have you read my reports? no chest beating, just fun, and me slamming myself for being slow and everything else i may screw up. Nothing impressive about me or what i do!) I have these juggy things that get in the way! I post to meet more folks, make new friends and partners. It works as i have met tons of great folks from all three forums.

I just wish you had spent more time and put a tr just lampooning me so I can't get all the glory I CRAVE. Come on if your gonna do it, do it right!! :provoke:

Not bad, not bad at all. But I'm more impressed with Sean Courage, who claims some kind of FKT for a RTID (round-trip including driving) on the Denny Tooth, starting from and returning to the UW rock. Accoridng to Sean, lots of climbers hike Mt Si for a trainer, but he "works out" on the Tooth. Which is just amazing, given that most of us consider a conquest of the Tooth to be the achievement of a lifetime. Contact Sean for specifics (he's probably Steven Sea Gal or Richard Noggin) if you hope to compete.

Doug / cbcbd,

To be fair, I can't judge klenke's intent accurately, either.

He could easily be lampooning himself, with his choice to speedclimb a somewhat lesser mountain.

He did take care to note his form of flattery.

So I'm not taking it as a negative against Leor; maybe a way to say many of us wish we could go that fast and light on something big, but won't be able to anytime soon!

My comments were more to say Leor's reports have a natural style and enthusiasm, which I enjoy.

I think he's more joking about the fact that it's a small little mountain, and he provided split times for it. :) I don't think it's mean to poke just a little fun at the split times crew anyway. I think most of us do at least a few things that others might consider silly and shouldn't get offended if somebody jokes about them. I hardly think it's an attack on the person themself. How many people have given Klenke and crew shit about the various top 100 lists and such? I seem to recall plenty of people doing that, and I doubt Klenke took that very personally, but who knows. It's all good!
