To be fair, our own cherished bullshit drove us into bankruptcy. Treating houses, including primary residences, as pure speculation. Praying to a combination of money and some long dead Jewish hippy. Blowing 'We're the Greatest Nation On Da Whole Earth' smoke up our own asses. Thinking we deserve more than we could ever possibly afford. Believing that we actually landed on the moon. Yoga. Yogurt. Whatever happened to Yogi Berra?

Bush just tapped into the national psyche, or, well, the dumber half of it, anyway.

Scamnation, we've sure fucked ourselves this time. And some of us more seasoned folk thought the Vietnam era was bad times....

Update:

North Korea: 2 US Journalists Pardoned

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has issued a "special pardon" to two American journalists convicted of sneaking into the country illegally, and he ordered them released during a visit by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, North Korean media reported early Wednesday.

Bush's UN Envoy, John Bolton Responds:

"It comes perilously close to negotiating with terrorists," Bolton told AFP when asked about Bill Clinton's trip to secure the release of journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee...

"I think this is a win-win for North Korea," according to Bolton, who believes all negotiations are useless in trying to force North Korea to abandon its weapons-grade nuclear program.

Some people are too dumb to separate 'Obama inspired' internet ads from his actual policies.

Like I said, for the lower half of this Great Nation, reality is whatever you really, really want to believe.

In fairness, ol' Dumbya is holed up in a Dallas whites-only enclave these days.

What a great man.

Domestics claimed a decent share of the new vehicle sales generated by the program as well. The Detroit News notes, "Detroit's automakers accounted for 47 percent of the first 80,000 ‘Cash for Clunkers' sales, the Obama administration said today...which is above their overall share in the auto market of about 45 percent." The top-selling vehicle under the program so far is the Ford Focus. "Four of the top 10-selling vehicles are manufactured by Detroit's Big Three. Of non-Big Three purchases, the Transportation Department's preliminary analysis suggests that more than half of these new vehicles were manufactured in the United States."

what this doesn't mention is that while the percentage was high for american made cars being picked, the replaced car top 10 list is 100% American cars.

now seriously, what do you fine intelligent folk see as the outcome here? sure we're going deeper in debt, but still less as a % of gdp than back during that last great american war. and bonds continue to sell at lower than expected interest rates. and what, our debt is comparable to the entire EU as a whole? no, the present trajectory seems a bit ummm untenable, but where do you see it exactly going? ok bonds start to bid at higher and higher interest rates....
