Thanks to all who answered my question. FYI...I am assisting my best friend who is trying to get his Dad, age 81, to the summit of Hood. He has done all 50 State Highpoints except Hood, Gannett & Granite Peaks. So...we wanted the highest & hopefully, safest high camp possible to shorten summit day. Thanks again to all who contributed!! :lmao:

If you are going to climb it this year, climb it fairly soon while there is still a fair amount of snow. Hood is a nasty, unpleasant mountain in late summer -- smelly, volcanic dust, and the routes are more limited. I tried climbing it once in August, big mistake.

maybe he did denali and rainier years ago, when he wasn't 81.

Probably prefers to space things when he can being 81. even if the friend's dad was 45 and blazing fast there is no harm in asking info about a high camp, maybe he is not from around here.

My friends Dad turned 81 several days ago. He did Denali with his son over 20 years ago. He has been on this quest since his early 50's and obviously did most of the harder ones early on. The reason for the high camp question was to make summit day a little easier for him but even so, at 81 he's in remarkably good condition. Our planned summit day is Sunday, June 14th. with Monday as an alternate second attempt. Wish us luck & good weather!! You can see several photos of our group on Hood several years ago at http://www.shellmontinn.blogspot.com. Scroll down page to 3rd. entry.
