Setting a side any discussion concerning the accurcay of the data shown above..it seems clear that a payroll tax reduction is a contender for most bang for buck and is on the very short list of things that could have been passed as law almost immediatley and very simply. Instead we have a law passed that no one has read and falls very short of its proclaimed goal....

Change! It's here!

The CBO expects only 3 percent of the money ($595 million) to be spent in fiscal 2009 and 2010. The peak year of projected spending is 2014 at $14.2 billion.

umm, your sound-byte refers only to the money allocated for the healthcare IT proposal. had you read the entire editorial (I know, lots of those wordy things) you might have learned the CBO estimates $200B of the entire bill will be spent in 2011 or later--implying at least that nearly $600B will be spent this year and next.

certainly evokes a little different message than you intended...

Right, PP's soundbyte concerns 2.5% of the total stimulus package. That is assuming we can take seriously anything written by Samuelson considering his habit of regurgitating GOP talking points.

Did you guys notice that most of the better "more bang for the buck" in STP's figure were fought tooth and nail by republicans. It ought to tell us how genuine they are in their complaining about the lack of effectiveness of the stimulus package.

Of course, you can't just throw a bunch of money at something and get something big and good made immediately and efficiently. We learned that in the first dot-com bubble. It will take years to negotiate a modernization of HIPAA, which was written pre-google, pre-SaaS. It will take more time than you think to architect a design, hire top talent, etc. Don't even get me started on legacy systems. Heck, it will take at least a year just to award grants and contracts.

Well the great news is that places like Washington, that are doing so well, appear to be looking at a net outflow of money, and will help subsidize places like Rhode island.

Is this the housing projects for Washington list? This is the housing help that 870 billion dollars will get Washington State? Whew, money doesn't stretch as far as it use to.

The table didn't import well. You must be very proud of your contribution. Maybe you all want to browse it to see where your money is going?

Last year government collected about 33 billion in revenue from the sale of cigarettes.

What I would do going forward is to reject a similar amount of projected revenue from the sale of pot, and continue to spend 8 billion a year on anti-pot enforcement. Particularly given nationwide record deficits at all government levels.

Yeah, that's what I'd do.
