All this partisanship has brought up too much fear based posturing on both sides. I see nothing wrong with background checks. The government supposedly cannot use them to fact find about "who owns what" but who knows the truth about the matter?

Good luck with that, Prole. I doubt Obama is going to make any big moves in this direction and on a National level I doubt the Congressional Democrats will either. There may be districts where they think they are safe, but my guess is they won't want to get mired in this issue even if they believe it should be addressed.

My support for Obama is little more than a "lesser of two evils" kind of endorsement. But, the fact that Americans (and the world) find Obama's message and policy prescriptions inspiring is a step in the right direction regardless of whether he's able to do much under the conditions he's been given to govern. Given the spectacular failure of neoclassical economics' ability to"deliver the goods" and the bankruptcy of American Conservatism finally becoming apparent, I'd say there is at least some political space in which alternative ideas and policy may get a hearing. The enormous support he's getting in spite of (because of?) charges of "socialism", he should govern confidently from the left, though I don't think he will.

I can understand the lesser of 2 evils, that MIGHT actually be the case here. However, inferring what the rest of the world wants is an interesting way for you to choose: interestingly and shockingly, although they can't agree on shit else, they agree on this - both the Palestinians and the Israelis support McCain.
