Elliot Glacier conditions??

I'm itching to swing the ice tools again, even if it is on Elliot. Usually it would be a no-brainer this late in the season, but with the snow lingering around so long I wasn't sure and wanted to see if anybody had seen it recently. Does anybody know if the crevasses at the toe are open?

we're heading up there on monday to do a little ice, i'll let y'all know how it looks, and hopefully post some pics.

now the next part, we have only been on the eliot for crevasse rescue practice, not to do ice. Where is the best part to find some good ice, without getting too close to the rock in the upper ice fall? from pics ive seen, it sounds like the smaller fall at the toe, on the west side?

you get extra points if you can force your way through up tot he base of the n face gullies!

force your way through and survive.....I think it should be added:-)

Biggest Ice fall I'd ever seen b4 or since swept that area once late August. The blocks were the size of houses and the noise was not something one could describe. Nice picture jtownsley!

This is what Ivan was talking about, crossing this jumble of ice blocks, up near the upper center of the Elliot. This was a few years back, photos showing Ivan belaying Oleg searching for a passage through Hood's idea of desert towers and arches.

I have never quite seen the Eliot like that... Usually, I am snowboarding down from snowdome...

That sure looks like a tasty adventure.... Perhaps next year I can convince someone to trip out in that mess :)...

dude, you can't go climbing in there - that's like, where the skull n' cross-bones are on the topo in the "climbing the cascades volcanoes" book n' stuff! :P

one of the other threads in the oregon forum here said it would stay closed through to till next summer b/c of downed trees - it said the tj trail would also be closed, though obviously that would be a lot easier to ignore.

would be nice if someone coudl confirm that the sky's not falling :)

We left the night before they closed the road! Haven't been back up since then.

Great pics man! We did not get that deep into the glacier. We spent most of our time in the lower ice fall, and then in between lower and upper drinking our beers before heading out.

And yeah, the beer didn't stay in that condition very long!!!
