Keith Richards and Mick Taylor on the extended version of Sympathy for the Devil, from Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out (1970), which is possibly the best ever live album - certainly the Stones at their best.

Thank god the title of the thread said "favorite" instead of best...because I would not put the RS guitar players on the top 1000 all time best.

There are SO many, but, right now what comes to mind:

Larry Carlton - Third World Man by Steely Dan

Jimi Hendrix - (so many, but) Voodoo Chile

Al DiMeola - (lots of solos when with) Return To Forever

John McGlauthlin(sp?) - Mahavishnu Orchestra

A bunch of stuff Harrison did with the Beatles

(I forget who played it) - Don't take Me Alive by Steely Dan

almost any list would be vastly incomplete

Are there any entries post the v-shaped guitar/spandex era? :fahq:

Surely to god someone has released an album with a decent guitar solo since then.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd's

While We Cry on Ledbetter Heights.

Speaking of Ledbetter, there's Mike McCready's short but sweet Yellow Ledbetter lick on Lost Dogs.

One of these might fit the bill...

Michael Hedges. All the YouTube sound quality sucks to show off his ability. Saw him in Boston in, oh, maybe 1990. Amazing acoustic performance. Had the poor bastards from the Berklee College of Music realizing they had just been presented with the height of the bar and that they were unworthy. Also saw SRV back in like 1988 or 1989 at a Paramount Theater sized place (can't remember the name). I was stuck on Al Dimeola back in his Return to Forever days and even saw them live in Chicago but haven't listened to that jizz for a long long time.
