We have upgraded to new forum software as of late last year, and it makes everything here so much better!  It is now much easier to do pretty much anything, including write Trip Reports, sell gear, schedule climbing related events, and more. There is a new reputation system that allows for positive contributors to be recognized,  it is possible to tag content with identifiers, drag and drop in images, and it is much easier to embed multimedia content from Youtube, Vimeo, and more.  In all, the site is much more user friendly, bug free, and feature rich!   Whether you're a new user or a grizzled cascadeclimbers.com veteran, we think you'll love the new forums. Enjoy!

South Sister this month??

Recommended Posts

Any thoughts on how realistic a winter climb of South Sister is this month? I've never been down there but I'm thinking of doing it with a friend sometime in February if the weather/avalanche conditions are appropriate. Anybody have any advice on this, or where to find good avalanche info on that region? I've never been down there so I'm clueless.

Hwy. 46 that takes you to the TH of SS is closed till the summer. That means you will tack on an additional 4-6 miles. If you were able to park at the TH you are looking at a 12mile round trip when doing the South Side.

Avy danger is high right now. Yes it will slide up on SS.

Avy forecast: http://www.nwac.us/products/SABSEA

Weather: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?minlon=-122.11&maxlon=-116.45&minlat=43.57&maxlat=47.67&mapwidth=354&site=pdt&map.x=36&map.y=330

Most people save SS for the spring. However, if you don't have a sled, you might be able to convince some slednecks to tow you to the Forest boundary line.

Good luck
