guy who got a better offer at Dick's

Speaking of Dicks....

Shawn posts an opening for a climbing job on a NW climbing website and all anyone can do is complain about this? Why are you whining about the salary of a job that you are not qualified for or don't want? (especially in response to someone with no control over that salary...)

If you don't want to apply for the job, don't! If you think AAI should pay their staff more, call them up and suggest that they charge more for their guiding. But just wanking off about how this job apparently wouldn't pay someone else enough money for your tastes is pretty lame.

Furthermore, this sort of response just decreases the likelihood that future jobs will be posted here. This does a disservice to other climbers in the region who might be interested in this or future positions. Some of us manage to survive making *gasp* less than the "poverty-level" $15/hr W/benefits, which was advertised with this job.

Shawn, thanks for posting this! It's cool to see NW climbing jobs posted on a site for NW climbers. Good luck finding someone.

Yes you guys are right. Better to just be quiet and polite. But sometimes you just can't help a good quip here on ol' cc.com .

And besides a little reality check on prices can be helpful to the community, not unlike calling bullshit on someone's inflated used gear prices in the yardsale forum.

FWIW Marylou did say it looked like a cool job, and I have to commend the guy for being upfront about the big downside in his advertisement when he could have easily not mentioned that part. Sounds like it might be a cool job, probably a lot more work than a burger flipper, but certainly more interesting.

What the hell is the matter with you guys?

There is an entire culture and community of people who are resourceful enough to thrive on that sort of salary. Fortunately for them, they are not here on the internet 24/7 to represent themselves like us poor crotchety schmucks.

The job he posted sounds like a shitload of quality office internet time 24/7 ...... and the person with those skills would be making 3-5x that much elsewhere.

There are a handful of people out of hundreds here who can't seem to make a distinction between the Spray section and the rest of the site. Visitors who want spray know where to find it. The vast majority of visitors on non-spray forums don't want to have to wade through the tired bullshit from these few. This only results in less interest in the site as a whole, which isn't good for any of us.

Don't think this job pays enough? Fine. Post a link in Spray and rant away, start your own guiding company with and offer higher wages, or STFU.

I fully expect those few I'm referring to will act true to form and feel the need to "comment" on this posting with a personal attack. Knock yourselves out: the point still stands.

Also, remember that Bellingham is not Seattle. Housing, food and most everything are cheaper here than Seattle or Portland. Maybe not as much a difference as in the past, but wages up here still reflect that differential.

There are plenty of 'hamsters that would consider $30k + benefits a pretty reasonable gig.

Totally, because I SO care how interested people are in this site, and a high level of interest is SO important for my well-being.

And, why is it spray to point out that the offered salary is perhaps low for the job expectations?

Looked like a really cool job until that part at the bottom about the poverty-level salary.

Way to drive home how I am under the poverty level…..

No way that salary is poverty level. Be a great job for some folks I would think.

Someone who loves to climb and be around climbers for instance. Thanks for posting it here Shawn, good luck with filling the position.

...too many dicks here, spreading negativity. have fun in the circle jerk, i am done with this site."

exit post alert!

yes, according to the government, it is not.

In practical terms its pretty low though.

But then (unless you own the company and are $ driven far beyond the adventure aspect to simply make profit) it's par for the coarse in the guiding game.

The funny thing about the indignation is the good correlation between thread views and posts on thread - stupid trainwreck thrunting generates interest.
