I spent the day there yesterday, just doing the tourist loop up Johnson Ridge. Pretty cool place.

But I was appalled at the way they're fleecing visitors. I mean, $8.00 (in US dollars, even) just to get out of your car and walk around? C'mon, for that I should at least be allowed to have a campfire, but NOOOO. Not only are campfires not allowed, but even just camping isn't allowed, even if you're willing to pay extra. What is this, some sort of "social engineering" thing?

And that movie they show you, well, it was pretty well done, but I thought it was kinda violent considering all the families with little kids there. Really, doesn't someone screen these things?

But all told, it was a neat place to spend a day. Maybe if the NPS takes it over, then you won't have to pay extra to get out of your car, and they'll allow campfires- maybe even camping.

What would change? Is it now under the mgmt of the FS or the NPS? The NPS is NOT underfunded by any means. Example: MORA has made a huge dent in their storm repoairs already, while MBSNF hasn't got any money for theirs to speak of. Even the PCT damage from '03 isn't fixed yet.

Exactly. That fee is bogus. I pay for an annual NP pass with the add-on which covers the TH passes, and St. Helens has never been included. This may have changed this year (with a $15 hike in price)

Even so, this fee still pales in comparison to the fleecing instituted by the socialist Canuck gov't.

funny - took my daughter up to the visitor center when she was 2 - she made it about 20 seconds into the film when she became completly unhinged - "the trees! the trees! the trees! why?!?!?" damn near shitting meself w/ laughter while trying to get her out of the darkened theater...
