Brewer
Back in 2003 I purchased a 10mm 60m Mammut rope (long story, but this was before I knew anything about mountaineering - and I'm still learning). IIR, I paid between $115-150. Basically, I want to know if the rope is a dry rope and if it can be identified by the color of the weave. Is there a way to find out? Can I soak the rope and see if it takes on water? /noob, thanks
archenemy
You may want to send a pic of it to Mammut and ask them.
counterfeitfake
I take it the markings on the ends are no longer there? You can dip it in water and it should be pretty obvious whether it's dry treated.
archenemy
Even with a Mammut? I think even their regular ropes are teflon coated. Doesn't that make the water bead and roll off pretty quick too? I have actually never done a comparision like this so I don't really know.
counterfeitfake
hmm... I have a non-dry Mammut that got drizzled on and seemed to soak it up pretty quick. I haven't actually done a dip test so I guess I'm not sure.
archenemy
Interesting. Certainly someone out there has done this! Next time I think of it, I'll pull my dry rope out and compare it to a regular one in a dip test. You got me curious.
Brewer
Thanks for the interest and the replies. The "markings" on the end consist of a wrap-label telling me it's a 10mm and 60m. That's it, I think. I will follow up on sending a photo to Mammut, and I will probably dunk it and see what it does. Maybe it will be obvious, maybe not. Thanks again. PeterC
I bought a mammut *galaxy* 10mmx60m dry treated around that time. Mine was sky blue w/ orange accents. This site: http://www.mtntools.com/cat/rclimb/rope/MammutGalaxyDynamicRope.htm illustrates that there's a lot of color options/features (and it looks to me like they've changed over time) so dipping is probably the way to tell whether it's dry. Brewer
Can't tell from the photos if that is mine (or at least has the same color pattern) but it resembles the "classic blue" pattern. Not terribly useful if my rope is "classic blue" is it? Makes it sound like there are dozens of other models with that pattern... I guess I'll be dipping it to see.
