On Thursday, January 11, 2007, The Mountaineers are hosting a panel discussion on the current state of Himalayan climbing. The second deadliest year on record at Mt. Everest and other controversial events have prompted us to take a look at what's going on ten years after the events chronicled in the book "Into Thin Air." This will not be a rehash of what happened in 1996, but rather looking at where Himalayan climbing has been to help decide what it will look like in the future. Issues concerning safety, high-altitude rescue, commercial guiding, recent events and small party/individual climbing dynamics will be open for discussion.

The evening will start with a brief segment from the film "Brotherhood of the Rope," which chronicled the events of the 1938 and 1953 American expeditions to K2. The segment will help place the larger topic in historical context. Following this is the heart of the event, the panel discussion. We've brought together an impressive list of panelists with a incredible depth of experience. The lineup is as follows:

Tom Hornbein - retired UW doctor, member of the first American party to summit Everest's west ridge. Tom will be moderating the panel.

Ed Viesturs - Climber who recently became the first American to reach all fourteen 8,000 meter peaks without using supplemental oxygen.

Michael Kennedy - founder of Climbing Magazine and mountaineer

Eric Simonson - Mountaineer, author, guide, owner of International Mountain Guides, based in Ashford, WA.

D a n Mazur - Mountaineer, guide. Dan recently rescued Australian mountaineer Lincoln Hall on Everest.

Ed Douglas - Author, mountaineer. Has deep background on legal issues related to Everest, Himalayan climbing

Ray Huey - UW professor, expert on Everest fatality statistics.

Tickets are $10 for the general public, $8 for Mountaineers & AAC members. Tickets are available through The Mountaineers office, or by calling 206-284-6310.
