Disrespect and CC.com

Recommended Posts

Throughout this whole Hood thing, the moderators and members have been, for the most part very careful in maintaining a deserved respect for the climbers, family members, friends, and rescue personnel. Threads questioning the climbers preparedness, skills, decisions, etc. have been scrubbed of disrespect and rogue comments have been torn apart.

Why is it, then that it's seemingly OK on this site to make a mockery of these men's faith, the same faith that their grieving friends and family are no doubt clinging to during this tough time?

I see all these stupid "baby jesus" comments and peppering nonsense posts with Christianese, and then you condemn a guy for disrespecting the climber's memory by jabbering about whether or not they should have been carrying PLBs.

It should be obvious that there are many of their friends and family still trolling this site, trying to sort this out. Perhaps you guys should step outside your sophmoric little echo chamber and consider that the faith that these people are leaning on is every bit as sacred to them as the memories of their loved ones.

While I am a believer, I do not support this sentiment.

I support the right to free speech and the right to be non-PC in one of the few last public places that welcomes it.

CC.com respects the right to be disrepectful (in my opinion).

Unfortunately this right is not equally enforced on this site...IMO

listen, you've been on this board long enough to know that those babyjesus things have been around looooooong before this happenend...

completely unrelated to trying to torque the families or show disrespect...I have a feeling that those three folks would have a similar vein of humor running through them...

another thing,

"Calling the Lord's name in vain" can have another interpretation than the common one...this is the definition given to me by my Pop...a tough old bastard...and i personally think its more in line with the real interpretation than the common one of not swearing...

It goes like this: Don't call My name to come get you out of a mess that is unrecoverable from and you dug yourself into...feel free to hope for a miracle but don't plan on it, cuz that would be the ultimate in vanity and uselessness...ie that you are worthy of and deserve a miracle to save yourself from a situation...

Riiiight...and someone from Mississippi or wherever reading about a climbing accident, then going to a climbing website to offer blanket judgments of climbers is just "an inquisitive mind" I suppose? For many anarchist/atheist/7th day agnostic climbers who don't believe in organized religion, the lifestyle of climbing they have constructed with it's juxtaposition of physical and mental challenges and the tight relationships that form with your partners- this is the essence of their lives, just as the churchgoing person's essence is their faith. Then along comes Phil the Phucker and others like him saying in essence "you guys are selfish and your lives are stupid and reckless". And sending PM's with porn links. Etc. Whatever, laugh it off. It's the internet. Grow some skin. Be Hard to Kill.

If I were a loved one I think I would be far more disgusted with the spectacle of 500 people I've never met salivating over discussions about what type of shoelaces my loved one was wearing, and whether better ones would have made a difference.

What if the lost climbers liked tacos? Should we avoid taco jokes too?

Hey, I don't mind if people come on and pour their faith over my head, as long as they don't mind if I spit it out.

Turnabout is fair-play, isn't it?

Being contrary or skeptical is not the same thing as being disrespectful, btw. If you voice your faith in a public forum, you can't then demand protection from non-believers.

Considering that there are tens of millions of christians out there who revel in the idea of my going to hell forever, openly discriminate against gays, and actively work to force their kooky cult down the rest of our throats at every turn, the possibility of offending them on a Spray really doesn't cause me to loose much sleep.

I feel the same way, I just phrase it a little differently. When talking about something like this with a person of faith, I can't help but say that my own faith is utterly unaffected by what anyone else says (especially in Spray). And if it were, I would spend my time and effort looking for the reason why; and spend none of my effort on being offended or bothering other people with what is a deeply personal issue.
