Not a coffee drinker, but hubby is. He's another Stumptown fan, but if you want really great coffee, check out sweetmarias.com. Once you start roasting your own, you won't go back!

I'm going to have to disagree on this one. Without a good (read commercial) roaster, it is nearly impossible to get an even roast. Also, in my experience, most people who roast at home don't do it right (i.e. drink it the day it's roasted instead of letting it de-gas).

Anything beats Starbuck's burnt coffee though...

I heard the Seattle Stumptown will be open early April! Anyone else have any info in it (specific location on cap hill, date to open, etc)?

home roasting can be done very successfully with a hot air popper. And obviously if you don't do it right it's gonna be terrible.

The issues with *$ isn't necessarily overroasting. Even Stumptown has some "overroasted" french roasts to appease the typical american drinker who has become accustomed to that carbon taste as being good coffee.

Their volume of production pretty much guarantees they can't keep fresh roasts at all those locations like a smaller op can, and they have all resorted to pushbutton automatic machines due to rsi injuries and training issues at the locations using the la marzocco semiautomatic machines. It's a shame, but probably a wise business move on their part. At least you know exactly what you'll get when you walk into any starbucks. Which is also why they are so hated.

But there are also some cool people who work at starbucks, and they are of course reliably consistent. And incredibly successful.

Crikey, three pages of spray about coffee in PDX and not one mention of Blue Gardenia? They're over on Miss'ippi, in the courtyard place by Laughing Planet. Tiny shop dominated by the roaster and big case of the best cinnamon rolls (and a grip of other fine house-baked goods). Highly recommended; they get wicked and wild with the single-origin beans, and really coax some unique flavors out of their coffee.

As a bonus, you will not get vibed by bike messenger wannabes with Krypto locks in their back pockets who think they are somehow important because they know where to get a good cup of the strong black. Fuckin' A.

For those of you who can't be bothered doing two things at once:

Scientist Develops Caffeinated Doughnuts

(01-26) 04:40 PST DURHAM. N.C. (AP) --

That cup of coffee just not getting it done anymore? How about a Buzz Donut or a Buzzed Bagel? That's what Doctor Robert Bohannon, a Durham, North Carolina, molecular scientist, has come up with. Bohannon says he's developed a way to add caffeine to baked goods, without the bitter taste of caffeine. Each piece of pastry is the equivalent of about two cups of coffee.

While the product is not on the market yet, Bohannon has approached some heavyweight companies, including Krispy Kreme, Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks about carrying it.

I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still cant face the day

I'm thinking of the lady who got lost along the way

And if I dont stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone

I'll be reachin for the bottle, lord, before this day is done

I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still cant face the day

The room was filled with laughs as we danced the night away

But my sleep was filled with dreaming of the wrongs that I had done

And the gentle sweet reminder of a daughter and a son

Sitting alone, my friends have all gone home

You never know when they'll come droppin' in

Thinking of girls with their fingers in my curls

Too young to understand how love begins

I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still cant face the dawn

The radio is playin a soft country song

And if I dont stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone

I'll be reachin for the bottle, lord, before this day is done

Your breath is sweet

Your eyes are like two jewels in the sky.

Your back is straight, your hair is smooth

On the pillow where you lie.

But I don't sense affection

No gratitude or love

Your loyalty is not to me

But to the stars above.

One more cup of coffee for the road,

One more cup of coffee 'fore I go

To the valley below.

Your daddy he's an outlaw

And a wanderer by trade

He'll teach you how to pick and choose

And how to throw the blade.

He oversees his kingdom

So no stranger does intrude

His voice it trembles as he calls out

For another plate of food.

One more cup of coffee for the road,

One more cup of coffee 'fore I go

To the valley below.

Your sister sees the future

Like your mama and yourself.

You've never learned to read or write

There's no books upon your shelf.

And your pleasure knows no limits

Your voice is like a meadowlark

But your heart is like an ocean

Mysterious and dark.

One more cup of coffee for the road,

One more cup of coffee 'fore I go

To the valley below.
