White House spokesman Tony Fratto said Saturday that Bush's latest argument does not reflect a real shift...."But there is the realistic strategic concern that if a country with such enormous oil reserves and the corresponding revenues you can derive from that is controlled by essentially a terrorist organization, it could be destabilizing for the region."

...and we surely wouldn't want that to happen.

At a stop in Missouri on Friday, he (Bush) suggested that such radicals would be "able to pull millions of barrels of oil off the market, driving the price up to $300 or $400 a barrel."

100% Pure Bullshit. Gotta love it.

$400 a barrel oil would be the best thing that could happen to the world. The amount of research and development devoted to gasoline alternatives in the six months immediately after such a price shock would exceed the total spent on such research in the preceding century. Which is just what Big Oil, OPEC and the oil producing nations do not want to happen. Which is why the price came down from $80 to $60 recently.

Bush said extremists controlling Iraq "would use energy as economic blackmail" and try to pressure the United States to abandon its alliance with Israel.
hellno3d.gif NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

What good does our alliance with Israel do us, exactly?

Depends who you mean by "our" and "us". That discussion aside, none whatsoever. I was being sarcastic.

After seeing this article I talked to one of the professors at WWU who teaches Energy Economics, and he said that for every %1 pure drop in oil supply short-term, the price generally goes up about 2-2.5%

Anyways, he said that in the short term (like tomorrow or next week) if ALL Iraqi oil production ceased, the price wouldn't even ht $80 a barrel. (currently about $60)
