barkernews Posted September 25, 2006 Share Posted September 25, 2006 From this weekend: A 19-year-old college student from Washington County had to be rescued while trying to climb Mount Hood. Chris Dreher and a friend were headed up the mountain Sunday when the friend apparently started suffering from altitute sickness and turned around. Dreher kept going but fell after losing a crampon at the 10,800 foot level. When he couldn't regain his footing he decided to stay put and yell for help. Another climber heard his cries and called 9-1-1 on a cell phone. Several dozen searchers from the Clackamas County Sheriff's office and Portland Mountain rescue reached Dreher late Sunday afternoon and escorted him down to Timberline Lodge. Rescuers say Dreher--who was not injured--was not prepared for the strenuous climb. He didn't have a helmet or the right boots and wasn't carrying a cell phone. Dreher was heard to say: Those crampons were, like, totally bogus, dude... they kept fallin' off my sandals, like every few steps. Me and my parents are suin' those MoFo's. gslater Posted September 25, 2006 Share Posted September 25, 2006 My wife and I were up at the top of the Cooper Spur hike yesterday when we noticed the KOIN news chopper circling around for a long time. Thought maybe they were just taking pretty pictures on a nice day; didn't think it was too likely that there was a climbing incident. When his crampon came off, he continued to the summit, then got sketched out on the way down and started yelling for help. None of us rescuers actually reached him till he was on his way down after being assisted by a couple of recreational climbers. There were not several dozen searchers on the mountain that reached him, there were 6 of us, none of which were with the sheriff's office. 2 were from the AMR RAT Team, and 4 were from PMR. He and his buddy were carrying a cell phone, however when his buddy got sick, he went back down and took the phone with him. Now that I'm done with that, yes, he was stupid to even be up there right now, without a helmet, and wearing trail running shoes. He was lucky not to get tagged in the head with a rock. Rat_In_Training Posted September 26, 2006 Share Posted September 26, 2006 (edited) Yes, there are still some people climbing, however most of them are smart enough to not go any higher than crater rock. Aparently this moron made it to the summit, so it can be done, if you are stupid enough to try. Reports of toaster size rockfall seems to make me thing we need to wait a little longer unless you start your climb at 10pm on a cold night, and summit and are down before it ever gets light. Oh Yeah, I haven't been a Rat_in_training for almost a year now, just have been to lazy to go change the name. It's a blast, I'm so glad I have a job that lets me go climb on the clock every once in awhile.
