The only spray I saw was in pope's [Tumtum Peak] TR.

What? Are you mental??? That thing was a masterpiece and contained all the information needed to bag that seldom-climbed peak...all in the midst of a story of human endeavor, lady-lust and genuine adventure. If that's your definition of spray, brother, than bring more on!

until you old-time sprayers get tired of spraying.

Don't underestimate the silver-sprayer crowd.

Cue the geriatric:

Gary, your inquiry netted you some useful stuff like:

Gary,

I have a bunch of Desert SW guidebooks and would be happy to let you browse them to see which ones you'd like to purchase for your trip...just PM.

and

It specialises in blurry photos taken from miles away with few actual route names, topos or useful beta - including essential descent info - all done in the name of 'preserving the spirit of adventue'.

Other responses were less useful:

Have you heard of searching the motherfucking interweb?

or maybe just a teensy bit off topic:

my personal opinion is you molest wild arachnids.

So what. Drive on. Real life is no different. If you hung out in, say, Red Square for an hour and blurted your question to passers-by at random would you have gotten better responses?

I can never remember if it's Ben Franklin, Will Rogers, or whoever that it's attributed to but there's that great line about the best way to let the world know that so and so is a fool is to let them tell the world themselves. And while they're doing that just ignore them. What the hell; you're not perfect, and neither am I.

I realize I'm a little late in the game, after four pages, but I think Gary raises a valid and, for cc.com, important issue.

As I read it, Gary's initial thesis was that more people would post trip reports and offer useful information if cc.com was more civilized, and I think this is true. I know dozens of climbers who rarely post here or who have quit posting because of the inane, obnoxious, or downright rude treatment that even the most serious topics sometimes draw on cc.com. If we were a little more consistent about segregating the wheat from the chaff, I think we probably would see broader participation. My view is that if some guy posts yet the fifth trip report about Mount Stuart in two weeks and you find this boring - you should scroll on past. If some guy puts his foot in his mouth while asking

a dumb question about what knot to use for a belay anchor, you really don't have to smack him in order to bask in the knowledge that you are superior.

On the other hand, ChucK said it on page one of this thread and I agree: there has been greater restraint recently than at some periods in the past, and in fact we DO have quite a lively and varied discussion here as well as many of us are able to waste all day at work or perpetrate a bait and bash any time we want.

Two years ago, I don't think that someone would have gotten a helpful response if they asked what kind of boots to wear for a climb of the standard route on Mount Adams, or what kind of bolts to use in conglomerate. Meanwhile, you can find a partner for an evening workout or contact information for the bush pilot who will serve your next expedition, and the site has become the home for most reports of new alpine climbs in the region.

I beg to differ Matt. I have asked plenty of inane question on cc.com and i have been friends and met some to what you all refer to as the meanest most abusive people on this bbs. fact of the mater is I liked trask mike adomson capt cave man Greg W and others. i miss thier input. i got alot of good info from those guys and even climbed with some of them. I met one of my all time favorite climbers on the bbs and the best climbing mentor i have had to this point (Texplorer) yes there were times when perhaps people crossed a line and there were times when people needed to be moterated. but the reality is this is a BBS. every question i have asked here i have had answerd honestlly and with damn good betta. (what i wonderd more about or didn't feel like i could trust or believe i did more resarch on.) even 2 years ago 3 years ago i think i was even here 4 or more years ago. I have posted some of the lamest TR's in the univers including one about climbing at the collums becasue it was super fun and i wanted to. and guess what peopled laughed with me and at me and i didn't care because i said what i wanted to say. cc.com is what it is. it is the sum total of all it's parts. that includes you and your oppinions and me and mine. It includes my favorite Spraysage (G-Spotter you can run but you can't hide) and all of the climbers i have met and shared good times with on this bbs (Ivan and Mikey Layton you guys know how to show a girl a good time wink.gif ). if i could list everyones name i would. I am sorry Gary got his feelings hurt (that is what i am gathering i didn't see the origional issue) however i feel that if you want a kinder gentler bbs they already exist. why should cc.com be like any other place?? CC.com is special and that is what keeps me comming back. i laugh here, i cry here when we mourn becasue we have. some of my favorite people are here and remarkably some of them don't want to get in my pants wink.gifthe board seems to naturly shift and change as people come and go. i think our mods do a great job now. i like the teasing i find it amusing even when i am the butt of the joke. again there are times when moderation needs to happen like when someones personal (eeerr ummmm blush.gif ) life is being dragged arround in the mud. ( I will always love, appriciate and thank you OFf White) so there you have it the rambelings and mussings of a Muffy who has yet to finish reading this thread.

this last one takes this thread over the top. now just a few posts from pope and cpt.cave to kick it off the edge.

How i loved those guys grin.gif they never failed to make me laugh so hard couldn't stand it fruit.gif (even when i dissagreed with them) oh and Dan (can't remeber his posting name) sisusum (close but not quite right) that guy helped me stop smoking one of the times i have quit.

Getting back to the original post:

1) What's the consensus of everyone who posts here regarding spray, insults, hijacking, abuse of newbs, etc.? (Opinions of real people, not avatars.)

If you want the opinions of real people, ask them in person, face to face. If you want the opinions or spray or "abuse" of avatars, then post your message on a bbs, as you did. This is like asking characters on stage to respond as the actors, not as the characters they're playing.

2) Will the "abusers" voluntarily control themselves if consensus dictates as such?

Since when do "abusers" voluntarily control themselves? Do you really want "consensus" or do you want a pre-determined tone or culture which is non-threatening to you?

Pop psychiatry moment of the day: I think climbing, and being around climbers, meets certain needs for you that you try to meet through this online community. I think this community fails to meet those needs for you, and you're upset about that.

So, how do you suppose that you could meet those needs in a better, more healthy way?

I think the quote is "it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt", which may be attributable to Mark Twain (or not).

abraham lincoln actually - and no doubt he coulda pulled 5.10 in his mother-fuck'n stove-hat too, man-clogs n' all - civil war woulda gone all kafluey thataways

If you are looking to this crowd for support of your achievements, you need to develop your sense of self-esteem more.

If you post your TR's, beta, and spray for fun, entertainment, education and recognize that it IS THE FUCKING INTERNET NOT THE REAL WORLD, then you have a head on your shoulders.

I'm with Gary. I'm a thoughtful, sensitive, caring person, and test as exceptionally intelligent. I put a lot of effort and thought into posts wearing my heart on my sleeve then...

YOU FUCKERS RIP IT OFF AND WIPE YOUR ASSES WITH IT!

are there any lactating mothers out there that would comfort me?

I feel weird about this thread...kind of like the meek kid, who has someone else draw the bullies away from them for a day.

Seems to me, the way to enjoy this board is to not make yourself a target. In the meantime, I enjoy the pictures, TRs, and the faux personalities....well, most of them, anyway. I've gotten some pretty good beta off this board, and some awesome climbing partners, too.

There's been a few times when I looked back at threads where people made fun of me, and I remember being disgruntled at the time...and realized that I would've made fun of me, too.

I feel bad that I've never found a neutrino, or reviewed a windshirt, though, to identify myself with something. Hafta work on that one.

Ever since I joined this site, I've been Under Siege and Marked for Death. I've offered nuggets of Zen wisdom to all, only to be disrespected time and time again. I've offered to sing songs- alas, no takers. No respect. I just get shit. But do I complain? No. I'm Hard to Kill. I hold my head high in the knowledge that I can kick the crap out of anyone who tries to be Above the Law. I know that in being Out for Justice, I can bask in the inner glow that I'm on the pure path and making this a better place. Just look what happened to kevbone after I clotheslined him. cantfocus.gif
