RideT61
Anyone been up to Colchuck Lake area lately? Is the road still gated? Covered in snow? Is there a boot pack to the lake or would snowshoes be in order?
DirtyHarry
Gate, snow on road.

dbb
some friends went up towards argonaut this past weekend. punched a set of tracks up into the alpine (mtneers creek), but said there weren't many folks out. still have to hike the whole road. Stephen_Ramsey
There is a decent boot pack to where the Stuart Lake trail splits from the Colchuck Lake trail. Snowshoes or skis would be useful for getting to Colchuck Lake.
rock-ice
Bump. Anyone venture up this past weekend?
kadyakerbob
your best bet is to go on a weekend and become friends with a snowmobiler and have them give you a lift up to the trail head. cuts off 3.5miles of slogging.
mattp
That'd be nice, but it really isn't a bad walk up the road if that plan fails. Walking back down the road, when you are tired out after some monster snow slog, however, can be painful. You emerge from the woods without breaking your neck and the trip is over yet sadly not quite over yet...
DirtyHarry
Fortunately, skis tend to work pretty well for that whole going downhill on snow thing.
mattp
Yes, skis have been known to help but they won't necessarily make it effortless and, moreover, they keep the road gated well after it starts to melt out so we 206'ers from cc.com don't go up there and get our SUV's stuck and tear up the roadbed and stuff. rock-ice
Skis won't help you much for the first mile and the trail to the colchuck lake jnct was super icy when I went through, pretty scary to ski.
