Climbing Prayer???

Recommended Posts

I was sitting in church this morning and got to thinking if there was a specific prayer for climbing. There are prayers for driving, flying, ect.. With this upcoming ice season it would be good to have a prayer to say before each lead. So if anyone has or knows of a good semi short prayer, either of their own or whatever else please share.

Thanks,

Bryan Schmitz

P.S. If you don't want to post it you could e-mail it to me at bryan_schmitz@yahoo.com

A friend of mine recites this little mantra before she tackles scary pitches, or as she enters into cruxy sections...you can hear her saying

oh-waaaaaa

ta-gooooooo

si-ammmmm

Go ahead, say it out loud to yourself...it's like the "Om-mani-padme-um" chant....she says it calms her nerves.... wave.gif

I simply pray to have fun and return my group home safely. It the climb will involve and above average amount of hazard evaluation or go/no go decision I will ask for the wisdom to make good decisions which support having fun and getting home safely. I don’t bother to pray for success, or good conditions. I don’t think God cares about my successes in the mountains.

Got nowhere to wash my cloths

I remember one Saturday night

We had fried fish and Johnny-cakes

[To the tune of Battle Hymn of the Republic]

Will it go around the chockstone, called the belayer looking up;

Our hero feebly answered yes, and slowly inched on up;

He was trying to drive a piton, when his foothold crumbled out;

Oh he ain't gonna climb no more.

Chorus:

Gory, gory, what a helluva way to die;

Gory, gory, it's a sport I'll never try;

Gory, gory, what a helluva way to die!

Oh they ain't gonna climb no more!

The belayer felt the rope pull taut and tried to let it run;

But it jerked him from position, and he knew his time had come;

He left the ledge behind him as it shot up toward the sun.

Oh they ain't gonna climb no more.

chorus

They slithered over the friction pitch, and passed the southern call;

They had such a good exposure that it made a glorious fall;

They tumbled through the chimney, and sped on down the wall;

Oh they ain't gonna climb no more.

chorus

The days they lived and loved and laughed went running through their minds;

They thought about the girls back home, the ones they left behind;

They thought about the the ranger, too, and wondered what he'd find;

Oh they ain't gonna climb no more.

chorus

One had the rope around his neck, and pitons through his spleen;

An ice axe in his rucksack had split the other's bean;

The trails of red marked their descent as they neared the slopes of green;

Oh they ain't gonna climb no more.

chorus

They hit the ground, the sound was splat, the blood went spurting high;

Their comrades were heard to say what a colorful way to die;

As they lay there rolling in the welter of their gore;

Oh they ain't gonna climb no more.

chorus

There was blood upon the rucksack, there were brains upon the rope;

Intestines were intwined across the green and grassy slope;

We picked them up in a lunchpale after salvaging the rope!

Oh they ain't gonna climb no more!

chorus

Oh, I'm a sport climber, and I'm okay,

I sleep all night and I climb all day.

CHORUS: He's a sport climber, and he's okay,

He sleeps all night and he climbs all day.

I clip more bolts, I eat my lunch,

I go to the lava-try.

On Wednesdays I go shoppin'

And have buttered scones for tea.

Mounties: He clips more bolts, he eats his lunch,

He goes to the lava-try.

On Wednesdays 'e goes shoppin'

And has buttered scones for tea.

CHORUS

I clip more bolts, I skip and jump,

I like to press wild flowers.

I put on women's clothing,

And hang around in bars.

Mounties: He clips more bolts, he skips and jumps,

He likes to press wild flowers.

He puts on women's clothing

And hangs around.... In bars???????

CHORUS

I clip more bolts, I wear high heels,

Suspendies and a bra.

I wish I'd been a girlie

Just like dear DFA.

Mounties: He clips more bolts, he wears high heels

Suspendies?? and a .... a Bra????

(spoken, raggedly) What's this? Wants to be a *girlie*? Oh, My!

And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!

CHORUS

All: He's a sport climber, and he's okaaaaaaayyy..... (BONG)

I really appreciate that everyone has taken this very seriously. I thought about posting it on Rock climbing.com but thought that this is the type of shit that I would run into. I had this slight notion that the individuals on cascadeclimbers where of a bit higher intellect and integrity. It takes a sorry soul to make fun and jokes about such an honest question. I really get tired of all the weekend warriors sitting in their office posting B.S. about this 5.8 they did and all the experience they have and making jokes of honest posts and questions, and taking seriously post like "Tape or No tape". Now once again if anyone has any REAL prayers I would greatly appreciate it.

With Much Thanks and Little Hope,

Bryan Schmitz

P.S. I hope that al of you who spent all that time putting together those dumb poems actually got out and did something this last weekend.
