Closest quality alpine is the mainland as well, although there is some smaller OK stuff near Port Alberni. However, there is good surfing quite close by, up towards Port Renfrew. BTW - Bellingham is still quite a hike from the Island because of the ferry. With the pain in the assedness of the ferry, Squamish and the Coast Mountains are probably a better investment.
