Climb: Sloan Peak-Corkscrew

Date of Climb: 7/13/2005

Trip Report:

Our party of 4 left the trailhead Tuesday morning for a climb of Sloan. The weather was gray but we hoped for clear skies. Water level int the river was low, but there is a new tree in the river at the crossing that may create poblems in the future. Trail is hard to find after crossing the river unless you know were it is at. Once you find it is brushy but easy to follow with lots of blowdown, and a soaker if its wet.

We set up camp at 5400', lounged and again told each other tomorrow would be a nice day. We left camp at 6am Wednesday under foggy cloudy conditions. Roping up for the galcier we found a very broken up glacier. We chose to go below the first rock outcrop entering the creavass zone. With luck our party was able to utilize a few shakey bridges to gain the upper edge of the galcier.

Unroping we continued to the summit under foggy threating condtitons ariving at 9:30am. It started to rain as we began our descent. Going back across the galcier we took a higher line staying closer to the east face and north ridge. Again we found ourselfs crossing huge crevasses. At one point we either had to jump or bactrack to seek another option, we jumped! With the low snow year and the warm conditions I expect the bridges we crossed will melt out quick.

We made it to camp for lunch at noon and our cars the 4:30 happy hour. Although we were denied a summit view, a great time was had by all.
