Cascade Trifecta completed in Record 28 Hours

UTS

Some folks seem to be overlooking the fact that it's not the climbers that are chestbeating... it's the production team! Granted... they may be taking care of the PR for our CO friends, but we haven't heard anything here from the climbers themselves. For all we know - they don't think it's much of a deal either!

But I doubt it.

Kinda sucks when you can't do stuff that you enjoy, just for the pure enjoyment of it.

(added later... What UTC should really be promoting is the fact that they were able to deal with the logisitics of filming this outing. The organizational skills required to pull off the project from UTC's standpoint is well worth promoting.)

FUCK THIS! I'm driving out from Minnesota right now. We're gonna do this byotch right. Official timers, photographers, vidiographers, strippers, and t-shirts for everyone. We'll ride in a stretch limo from volcanoe to volcanoe, drinking Dom and stopping at every Indian Casino in our path. It'll be all about having fun, keeping it safe, and getting laid. I've got Sean John lined up as a sponsor, so we'll be climbing in dope saggy britches.

As a history buff, I think if you want to establish a Cascade Trifecta, the best model would be the 1926 trip by Truitt, Starcher and Blackburn. If you care about record times, then you should eliminate the automobile, because it adds a lot of uncertainty and variability. The 1926 party drove from Hood to St Helens, then walked from there. So, I think THE Cascade Trifecta should be St Helens, Adams and Rainier on foot. This is an achievement that honors Cascade history.

The 1980 Cascadian Annual article about the "Marathon of the Mountains" was excerpted from the 1927 Cascadian Annual. Unfortunately, no copies of the 1927 Annual still exist, to my knowledge. But here's a little more information about what Truitt, Starcher and Blackburn did, for anyone who cares to follow in their footsteps.

July 4 - From Spirit Lake to top of St Helens, 6 hours; from top of St Helens to Spirit Lake, 2 pm, 20 miles toward Adams, 10 pm.

July 5 - Hiked for 18 hours to base of Adams. Elevation lost and made this day approximately 11,000 ft.

July 6 - To top of Adams, 6 hours. Leave top of Adams at noon, back down the north side, past Chain of Lakes country to Spring Creek, 10 pm.

July 7 - 5 am Start hiking on trail until 10 pm at Berry Patch Ranger Station, west side of Goat Rocks. Wrong trail this day; six hours lost.

July 8 - Leave Berry Patch Ranger Station 6 am; arrive town of Lewis (Packwood) on Cowlitz River 1 pm; left Lewis 3 pm, arrived Longmire Springs at 9 pm.

July 9 - Left Longmire Springs 6 am; climbed Rainier via new route [sic] over Kautz Glacier, to top at 5 pm. Elapsed time from top of Adams to top of Rainier 77 hours. Descend to Paradise Inn via Gibraltar Rock and Camp Muir, 4 hours.

It seems to me that the trifecta should start at the St Helens parking lot (unfortuately you can't start at Spirit Lake anymore and the summit is a bit lower today) and end at the Paradise parking lot.

Edited to add: My intention is not to detract from the UTS accomplishment, which I think is fine. I'm just suggesting a higher standard if you want to establish THE Cascade Trifecta, one that would both honor history and stand the test of time.

I think the negative reactions to this can, in part, be blamed on Dan fido. Pre fido, speed climbing was something you did for fun. Now post fido it's no longer fun, and no one knows who to believe.

I would like to hear more from UTS on how fido pulled-out at the last-minute from assisting on Hood. That's too bad . . .

Lowell, the modern St. Helens is not the one that existed in 1928, which would make comparison with pre-eruption linkups problematic. Imagine, for instance if two pitches fell off the top of the Nose of El Cap, the difference that would make to the Nose speed record.

If they had other drivers, I don't think the record should count. They did not get themselves from point a to point b, they had help. Null and void trifecta. Aid. Might be fun to watch the movie though. Need stuff to do on rainy days.

(actually, who cares!?)

I would prefer it if they were to use other drivers. Why endanger other people on the road by driving fatigued just for your own stupid record?

It's certainly more responsible - but then it isn't their record is it? Or will it be expanded to include the name of the drivers?

I know I shouldn't bite, but I have to, because I have raced with Buzz and know he is an amazing athlete and cool guy. I also know that none of you have done what they did, nor could you, and all your griping makes you seem jealous and childish.

People, there is no "Boulder Conspiracy." These guys aren't chestbeating or making any real money doing this. I know it makes you feel good to denigrate others' accomplishments, and I understand a lot of people around here feel threatened when "outsiders" come in and do impressive things in the PNW. But how about being a little gracious and just giving the guys some credit for doing something really hard and fun?

none of you have done what they did, nor could you,

rolleyes.gif As far as the feat alone, good for them. I am even impressed a little. But the "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE" is what I'm not impressed with. And then for you to come here and say none of these fine folks could replicate the 'fecta? Get on your knees and prepare for a whoopin, boy.

I too know I shouldn't bite. But...

I know a few people that have done Rainier and Adams back to back, for speed... FOR THEIR OWN ENJOYMENT AND CHALLENGE. No publicity, no press release - just a cold beer at the end of it all. Now... I'm just one person, and I'm not in touch with the "elite" climbers... so if I know of people that have done this, then I'm sure there are tons of others. And is it sooooo far fetched to think others have tagged Hood onto Rainier & Adams, and slogged for a day plus... just to see how they do? It's not far fetched in my mind.

It's the whole "we did something no one else has" attitude that Chaps® me, which you so perfectly stated. I'm sure both climbers are great guys, and as I commented on earlier, they're not the ones chestbeating here. At least not directly. I just don't see what is so hard to fathom about other folks doing this - but just not caring enough to brag about it except to their drinking buddies.

And since I'm sure somebody will jump all over me... NO - I haven't done it, and have no desire to do it!
