I know at least that you get some primitive firewall and port managing, and I'm not sure you can connect a switch directly to a cable modem, but I could be wrong. Edit: a quick googling imparted the knowledge that I do, indeed, need a router. Which seems to be a switch combined with other stuff, like a firewall. Damn.
