But the same insularity that caused many liberals to lose touch with the rest of the country now causes them to simplify, misunderstand and condescend to the people who voted for Bush. If you want to understand why Democrats keep losing elections, just listen to some coastal and university town liberals talk about how conformist and intolerant people in Red America are. It makes you wonder: why is it that people who are completely closed-minded talk endlessly about how open-minded they are?

Interesting article. Thanks. Some good points made. Certainly a lot of what he is saying about insularity has been raging its ugly 'drowning man' head on this site.

David Brooks (an editor of the Weekly Standard) writing a piece legitimizing the current President. What a surprise!

If the Republicans are a "broad based coalition" why'd Arlen Specter knuckle under so damn quick? Why's Olympia Snow running scared? Why's Tom Delay (the hammer) in charge of the House?

Why'd the country turn out to support a Republican President, Republican Senators, and Republican Representatives?

They didn't! They turned out to support the same people who'd been in office all along! Look at the local, state and federal level - how many incumbents lost? How many races were even competitive?

Where'd those seats the Republicans gained in the House come from? The Texas redistricting plan designed by Tom Delay!

Yep. Citizens don't like filibusters.

Huh? Are you that brainwashed? They changed the composition of their district so much that there's no way they'd stand a chance of getting reelected! The Democrats have done the same in past - which is why we need 3rd party, independant district allocation

Where's Daschle?

OOoohhh! 1 incumbent! Wow, your right! It was an overwhelming victory!

Since we're talking about facts, I'll ignore the sarcasm.

The FACTS are:

American voters turned out in high numbers to support:

Republican Senators.

Republican Representatives.

A Republican President.

Daschle wasn't just "an incumbent". He was the minority leader. He was the Democratic figurehead in DC. "Was", being the operative word.

First time since Goldwater in '52 as well. No biggie though.

Yes, and as soon as two thing happen, the democrats will return to power:

1.)The figure out how to campaign against stop-at-noghting ugly campaining republicans

2.)The public reaizes the country is continuing it's downhill slide, and no amount of talk about 9/11 or terrorism matters any more.

It's a cycle...one side fucks it up, then it goes to the other, so on and so forth...

This election proves that scare tactics do work.
