Dateline New York:

"Freedom isn't Free" under dispute

Citing numerous violations of its copyrights and trademarks Haliburton Inc. announced that it will start charging license fees for people using the phrase "Freedom isn't Free" in emails.

Haliburton executives issued a statement describing their plans "[Halburton] has constantly asserted that we invented the idea of charging the American public for freedom, and we feel in the interest of fairness we must defend our rights in this matter"

Haliburton will begin sending letters to people who have distributed emails using the protected phrases. The company plans to request $.05 per use from each person accused of violating the copyrights. "We feel the value of these trademarks greatly exceeds the small charges, but we realize that the American middle class is experiencing difficult times at the moment."

People refusing to pay as requested by the letters will face civil litigation.

In related news, Haliburton executives announced they will begin patent infringement proceeding against Japanese manufacturers of $600 toilet seats.
