I will have a table set up in Index and will be charging $15 for the afternoon. There are rental chalk bags and harnesses available. Female climbers will need to be sized for a harness utilizing my patented "hands-on" technique. What the other shame is that Vertical World has figured out a way to make money from it when the hordes come in and rent gear. I believe many people will have a little extra emotional energy going next week, and physical activity is a good way to burn it off and offers a temporary distraction. erik Posted September 5, 2002 Share Posted September 5, 2002 i think the things that gets me is that since the 9/11 incident people seem to be more patriotic. why does it take a major cathosptic event to bolster support for one's county? i personally have always believed in the greatness of the United States of America and i always will. the riding of the emotional wave seems to me in some cases insulting. i would say that if someone were affected deeply by those events of a year ago, tha climbing for free for an hour or so doesnt reall offer any healing....... bandwagon patriotism?? is that what it is called. i read and hear about all the free and reduced priced things that will occur this coming week and in so many ways, it saddens me...where were these things after other horried events throughout us histroy? did i miss the free day at vworld after the la riots? or the unabomber acts of terriosm? what would make 9/11 any more significant if it were not for the terriost act? i do not think offering free gym climbing as a gesture to the people who were greatly effected by the tragedy. offer support to those people bys supporting your country and believe in its ideal, not some free crap that should and is free in other more enjoyable mediums. One might do it to provide a service to the community, for example, because they care about people, about climbing, etc.. A dated ideal? And is $15 a day too much? (More on weekends?) Stone Gardens charges $12 a day, $9 for students. Still expensive, but cheaper, and students get a break, which is cool. Also, A yearly EFT membership is like $24 a month, last time I checked. WAY cheaper. Plus, they don't give you grief if you weren't able to use your punch-card in the allotted time-frame (never did understand that one ). VW has always been solely a business venture for the fellow I mentioned, and it shows! I'd personally rather not climb at the GAP. And when these feelings of mine encounter this promo deal on 9/11, I guess I get a little hot under the collar. Hey, but that's what a deep breath is for! Yoga in action! That Rich and any other investors are sitting back and getting rich off undeserved income? Rich and any investors took a big risk in starting the VC all those years ago and have made a beneficial contribution to NW climbing. I know Rich has spent countless hours turning it into a success. There is no way this free day will earn the VW a windfall profit. It may even end up costing them a tad bit. To say something is a bit unseemly and to say that the motivations behind it are nothing more than crass commercialism are two completely different things. I say both Rich and the VW I have spent hours there as have many climbers (both trad and sport and some that only climb indoors!) It is a great place to meet new friends and hang out with old ones. Sometimes it's crowded and at those times I just turn around and leave but at 6am there is no better place to get a climbing workout in January! In the form of discounts and direct contributions, encouragement - including to ole Petey here himself.I have nothing against the Stone Gardens but the fond feelings I have toward Rich and the VC for service to the community and caring about climbing and people keeps me loyal to his venture. So go to the cheaper club. Personally as a long time VW member I like the fact that the rate is high enough to discourage daily drops ins that do not provide consistent cash flow and cause over crowding at peak times. Rich is definitely thinking of his membership! Whatever your personal beef with Rich you should know that others have the opposite experience. I wasn't able to use my punch-card in the allotted 3 months or whatever (traveling), and they wouldn't honor the last two punches. Called for a friend who works there, the manager was ill-tempered and refused to let me speak to him (never even passed the message along). At times, a general unwillingness to makes things fair. Plus, what, 16 or 18 to climb on the weekend? Sheeit. Force a membership down ones throat! I know I know, boo hoo boo hoo, but hey, that's where I'm at! And now, I'm done with this topic!
